It’s official…

Posted by Jay Tope on September 15, 2009 at 10:17 am

We are proud to announce that Athletic Republic of New Braunfels is now the official high school student training facility of SAsports.com. Shawn Dassie of Athletic Republic says it best:

“When an athlete walks through our doors, they walk into our world, where maximizing athletic potential is our anthem. Our trainers have the sports-science knowledge to improve athleticism safely and effectively. We assess your strengths and weaknesses and create a training program like no other—one that is tailored specifically for you—in an environment that can’t be found anywhere else. We train you to move better, faster, be more stable and be in the best possible condition for your sport. By creating a training environment that allows us to safely take you beyond what you can normally do, your body responds quickly, and the improvements are solid and long lasting.”

“Athletic Republic is the culmination of our 20 years of research and relentlessness. It’s a science-based sports training system that has delivered real, quantifiable results to over half a million athletes, including more than 2,500 Olympic and professional athletes, no matter their age, gender or sport. It’s a brand built out of a firm belief that there is a better way to train athletes, a better way to rehabilitate and a better way to maintain peak athletic performance.”

Many of the top athletes in the area are using Athletic Republic of New Braunfels. You need to have your son or daughter check out this amazing facility and program. Call Shawn Dassie at 830-627-7400 for a free trial session. Well, it’s free if you mention SAsports.com!

Senior Editor named UIL state announcer

Posted by Jay Tope on May 28, 2009 at 7:25 am

The UIL has selected SAsports.com Senior Editor Jay Tope as the opening day field announcer for the upcoming State Track and Field Meet June 5th at the University of Texas-Austin.

Jay has announced thousands of high school games and other events over the past 13 years in Texas, including the NBA All-Star Weekend and countless UIL regional tournaments.

We’ve consistently maintained a great working relationship with the University Interscholastic League since we stated SAsports.com in 2001,” he said. “This has much to do with both organizations having the same goals.”

The final race of the Region IV 5A meet - the 1600 meter relay - provided the same drama that usually accompanies great athletic events.

And while the Wagner Thunderbirds won this battle over Brownsville Pace, Judson, Warren, Eagle Pass, and Smithson Valley. it was the Judson boys and girls who won the team championships.

Many came to see New Braunfels’ pole vault star Demi Payne.

She won, and qualified for the state meet, to be held June 5-6.

Judson did, however, win the 400 and 800 meter relay races.

Christina Holland of Judson broke the regional record in the 300 meter hurdles.

The 110 hurdle finals - from left to right - Hayden Greenbauer, Clark (4th), Aaron Green, Madison (1st), Phillip Gaines, Judson (2nd)

Sidney Cauthorn of Lake Travis won the 4A 400 meter race ahead of teammate Victoria Noetzel.

How’s this for close in the 200: 1. (left) Sheldon McClain, Steele, 21.94; 2. (right) Cameron Hickman, Hutto, 21.98; 3. (center) Willie Culpepper, Brackenridge, 22.09.

BULLETIN: UIL Regional Track Meets Tentatively Rescheduled

Posted by Jay Tope on April 30, 2009 at 9:11 pm

(from the UIL)

AUSTIN, TX— After collaborating with University of Texas officials and the twenty UIL regional track meet hosts, the UIL has tentatively rescheduled the regional track meets to take place after interscholastic competition resumes on May 11. Additionally, the state track meet is scheduled to be held June 5-6 at Myers Stadium at the University of Texas at Austin.

“The decision to suspend competition was not a decision we took lightly,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “Much effort and consideration was given to resurrect the regional track meets and change the dates for the state meet. With the cooperation of our regional sites and the University of Texas, we are now able to hold the regional and state track meets as we had originally intended.”

On April 29, 2009 the UIL announced that the state track meet would be held May 14-16 and that qualifiers would come from the top four participants in each event from each region.

“At that time, we were simply trying to save the state track meet,” said Breithaupt. “When our staff had the time, opportunity and information they were able to make this happen. We had numerous calls in support of the original decision as well as calls to return to the regional format. We also know that additional conflicts may occur because of these changes. However, we believe this schedule represents the best opportunity for the most students.”

The tentative schedule and sites for the regional track meets is below.

‘The Last Track Race’ - A Successful Failure

Posted by Don Day on April 23, 2009 at 8:35 am

Special to SAsports.com

I saw his shoulder crushing towards my leg out of the corner of my eye. It was all in slow motion. Seconds seemed to race by. I remember thinking, “Oh, no, he’s gonna break my (Bleep)ing leg!!!” I heard the loud “crack” but felt no pain… yet. My leg slowly swung over my head with the sky as it’s backdrop, bending more than it was meant to bend. As my leg slammed down on the ground, time flashed forward to “real time”. I can’t remember if I yelled aloud or if I was yelling in my head at first, but it didn’t matter, I felt the slamming of my leg hitting the ground. It was a few days before Christmas, 1984, and this pick-up football game put a dent in my training regime.

Most runners I knew at least mentioned dreams of the Olympics at one point or another. All those training runs with teammates and rival competitors were the greatest times when I was in the peak of my endurance. I was asked several times if I was going to win a Gold Medal. Looking back, my times, as well as many of my peers’, were similar to Steve Prefontaine’s (year for year by age.) It was a time when my lungs had incredible stamina. I was in the best shape of my life. Now, however, I had a broken leg to contend with.

When I was about to be wheeled in for surgery, the doctor said he’d probably have to put metal pins in my leg. It was a runner’s nightmare. I repeatedly begged and pleaded over and over with him not to, repeating that I was a runner and would heal fast, until he finally told me he would consider avoiding that step. Fortunately, my pleas were heard, and I thankfully do not have trouble going through airport checkpoints. Both lower bones had been broken (the tibia and fibia) and was also cracked just above my ankle. I was told that my recovery may take up to four or five months because of the damage done.

Over the next few months, I tried to heal and begin training again. Over the first few weeks following the surgery, I was in a full length cast and taking some heavy pain killers. I whined and complained about the pain, and my mother expressed her concerns about me getting addicted to the pain killers. Being the athlete I was, and being against all help other than “will power” and endorphins, I painstakingly reduced the medication. I had to use my mental strength of visualization (trying to mentally isolate the “one cell” that “caused” all of the pain) and I eventually saw better days. I was relieved when my cast was reduce by half, allowing me to begin my real training.

My “half-cast” training included putting a bag around my cast so I could “run” in the swimming pool . Andy Chase would work out with me, challenging me to “pull-up contests”. I would do “toe-ups” since the cast would not allow me to do calve raisers. The rowing machine became my worst enemy. All of this, until the final decision to remove my cast was made after healing quickly (it was only three months since the break.) The cast was removed and leg examined. I ignored the fact that I had no feeling in my right leg below my knee. I ignored that I was terrified to put my full weight on it, in spite of my Doctor telling me it was strong enough (though I did wobble on it for a split second anyway to convince him it was time to be without a cast). I had lost flexibility in my ankle and had to break up scar tissue with foot excercises and running circles barefoot in the grass. I had convinced the Doctor, now I had to convince the new Coach to let me join the team.

After supplying a doctor’s note, along with further pleading and begging, he reluctantly agreed I could “be on the team” but would not let me run in a meet. I took the next month to train in the nearby grass, and eventually convinced the Coach to let me try to run in the last race of the season. I had this crazy idea of qualifying for the City and State meets, and then using the next few weeks to train even more for those races. I knew I was far from being ready, but it was the last regular meet of our season, and my last track meet in high school.

Tom Tope, one of my teammates, was to run the 800 meter race with me on the Sahuaro HS Track, and was one of the few who “believed” I could do it. Was I insane? Invincible? No, I was eighteen years old and full of determination.

Butterflies, stretching, strides, lining up, the gun went off. It was only a two lap race, and I tried to sprint the first 100 meters as I had always done before. At about the 100 meter mark, I realized I was in for trouble. I tried to keep my form intact as other runners zipped by me. I had to make the qualifying time or take at least third place. Tom slowed down and tried to make it look like he couldn’t run faster, but I yelled “Go!!!” I didn’t want to qualify through pity, I wanted to earn it. He let me save my dignity and raced ahead.

The last 100 meter stretch is where I typically heard cheering. All I heard this time was silence. I couldn’t look at anyone’s face, I sensed they were horrified at my hobbling, gasping, lung-screaming body. In my previous races, I had the benefit of the “Runner’s High”, an endorphin rush which usually occurred with at least half a lap to go. Not so in this last race. It was the most painful race of my life.

My right leg did not hurt, it was numb, though I felt the extra heaviness and struggled to keep upright. I wasn’t really running, I was throwing my right hip and thigh forward and lightly brushing my right foot on the ground as I fell forward, catching myself with my left foot in time to repeat the strides in agony. Horrified onlookers? Pained expression? Wheezing and gasping for air through what can only be described as a coffee straw, I was not going to quit. There was plenty of time to die at the finish line. I couldn’t place well enough to qualify; I was now racing against the clock. That last stretch is forever locked in time for me. I crossed the finish line, missing the qualifying time by a few seconds, but now and then I still feel like I’m stuck on that last stretch.

I wanted to collapse. The race was over and the other runners picked me up. Tom looked surprised that I finished, let alone still alive. It was then that I realized he could only have believed so much of my wild goals, the rest I had to prove on the track. The endorphins never kicked in. At one point, I thought I would stop breathing, as it seemed to take about twenty seconds to suck in a full breath, which was five less than I needed each time I tried. Eventually, normal breathing came back to me.

Runner Brad Pos had a reputation as a wild card, though tough as nails. While I was still breathing hard, he approached me and apologized, humbled himself. Talk about integrity, to be able to do that, I was caught off guard. He said something about me having more courage in my little finger than he had in his whole body. Thanks Brad. Truly one of the most honorable moments in my running career, as he and others seemed to recognize I gave everything I had. I thanked him and shook his hand.

It was a “Successful Failure.” I lost, but gained victory. I did not qualify for running any more races that season, but passion was recognized and respected. It didn’t matter what anybody’s status in society was or how much we paid for our shoes, or what part of town anyone lived in. We were all equals when we hit the track: win, lose or draw. Fame and fortune are fleeting. Passion endures forever. Thanks to all of you who I have had the pleasure of racing and training with, it’s been a blast. I look forward to the next run.
