Merino triple leads Brandeis over Uvalde 12-3
by Mark Kusenberger

Faith Merino’s three-run triple gave Brandeis a lead they would not yield, as the Broncos defeated the Uvalde Lobos 12-3 in six innings Saturday afternoon at Northside Field #1.
After Uvalde had taken a 3-2 lead, Brandeis loaded the bases against losing pitcher Lyndi Smith (0-3). With one away, Emily Smith doubled, followed by a Taylor Johnson single and a walk to Anna Parnin. One out later, Merino tripled to score all three, and Brandeis had the lead for good.
Before the game was finished, all nine Lady Broncos in the batting order had at least one hit, and eight had scored at least one run.
Winning pitcher Lauren Torres (2-0) pitched out of a bases-loaded, one out jam in the top of the first. After a one-out double by Uvalde’s Macy Ybarra, and walks to Lyndi Smith and Avery McHugh, Sierra Jimenez grounded to third baseman Emily Smith, who threw home to catcher Taylor Johnson for the force; Johnson then threw to first baseman Merino to retire Jimenez for a 5-2-3 double play, ending the inning.
Brandeis (3-1-1) scored two in the first on an RBI single by Victoria Silva and a run-scoring error. Uvalde (0-5) took the lead with a three-run third, beginning with a leadoff single by Monica Perez. Two strikeouts later, Lyndi Smith and Avery McHugh walked to load the bases, then Jimenez singled to drive in Perez and Smith; McHugh scored on an error to put Uvalde in front.
Merino’s triple in the bottom of the third put Brandeis in front 5-3; Merino scored on a basehit by Angelica Sifuentes to extend the lead to 6-3.
Silva came to the pitching circle to relief Torres in the top of the fourth and pitched three shutout innings for the save. Silva gave up one hit, walked none, hit one batter and struck out three.
Brandeis closed out the scoring with a six-run sixth inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. Five of the first seven batters got hits, and a tiring Lyndi Smith threw four wild pitches.
During the bottom of the sixth, the game reached the Northside Tournament time limit, canceling the seventh inning.

Taft and St. Edwards graduate Kari Wright is now the softball and cross-country head coach at Medina High School.

My name is Christina Rodriguez, a 2009 graduate of Clark High School. Today I’m writing this column because I think it’s important that San Antonio know that there’s a local team here that just gained national recognition.
This story may have already been brought to your attention. If that’s the case, I am asking you to try to see it through a different perspective… my perspective.
I’ve been playing softball since I was about five years old. I was the girl with dirt under her nails that got blisters from ballet slippers and complained that I couldn’t run my fastest in a dress. I started out as the only girl on a team full of boys yet that never stopped me. Now on the diamond, I am a leader and a teammate. To me, softball was never just a sport; it is a way of life… my way of life. Besides basic fundamentals, the sport has taught me life principles that I am going to carry with me for the rest of my life.
I began as a third baseman. Third basemen are usually those girls on the team that need to be able to read the signal, adjust to the pitch, and take a good hit from the clean-up batter, all in a matter of three seconds. Now, I’m the catcher; the girl who has to be able to read the batter, know my fielders, work the count, and call every single pitch, knowing that every decision I make could determine the entire game. Initiative is up to me; when the team’s in a pickle, it’s up to me to call the huddle and know what needs to be said to all eight players about what needs to be done for every possible play. It’s my job to stay ahead of the game through all seven innings. This has taught me to “stay ahead of the game” in other areas of life as well. I’m not just some stupid teenager who’s looking for an easy ride. I live my life knowing that every decision I make will no doubt have an influence on my future. I don’t screw around, do drugs, or party myself stupid. I’ve learned that by setting a standard and living it, others will follow.
Most importantly, softball has taught me how to have a true passion. I carry a genuine respect for the game. It’s not about who gets the trophy. It’s about the sound of the bat when it connects with the ball; sliding under a tag after a wild pitch; diving head first to catch a fly ball; or gunning down the runner who gets an inch too far off of third base. I don’t play for the audience or for the recognition, but more for the pure joy of playing the game and being good at it. I’ve learned that when you’re passionate about something, even in life, you respect it, perfect it, and do it wholly. Well, I am passionate about what I am; and what I am is a ball player, a daughter, and an apprentice. I care about what I make of myself; and I know that it’s up to me; not my parents, not my coaches, or my friends. I’ve learned that if you don’t adjust to those curve balls life throws at you, you strike out. And, I’m not about striking out.
This past weekend, a very talented group of young women made softball history. We go by the name Texas Challengers Gold. We are the first team ever from San Antonio to qualify ASA “Gold” (Amateur Softball Association of America). The ASA Gold National only allows 64 of the best teams in the United States to attend, and we are officially one of them. I am one of the captains on the Texas Challengers, and I speak for the team when I say that all of our hard work has finally paid off. Originally, our goal was simply to pay for a good college education through our athletic ability; qualifying ASA Gold was an extra blessing along the way. By the way, every single senior on the team has their college education paid for. All nine graduates have signed national letters of intent to play college ball. Eight of those nine graduates will be playing right here in our backyard at Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary’s University, or the University of the Incarnate Word. I am so very proud of every single one of my teammates.
I know, without a doubt, it would mean so much to all of us if we were recognized for our accomplishments. Like I said before, we don’t play for the recognition, but right now we are trying to raise money to represent San Antonio as we attend this national competition despite these economic times of hardship. Games for the ASA national will be held August 1-9, at the Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, OK. This is the same stadium that Olympic gold medalists play on. It is such an honor and a blessing to just be given this opportunity. Anything that you do to help us is greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much for your time.
Editor’s note: If you would like to help Christina and her teammates get to nationals, contact us: jaytope@sasports.com and we will make those arrangements. And we also thank you for your time.
