Bulldogs rotation defeats Boerne 61-45

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

Somerset coach Bryan Penna drew a lot of attention to his Bulldogs when he began his new substitution pattern.

Penna, modeling their approach after 3A state champion Dallas Madison, would start five players, let them play about four minutes, then play another five for the rest of the quarter. It kept players fresh, and gave opponents the effect of preparing for two teams.

But Penna is not hidebound by this setup, and his willingness to adjust was a key to Somerset’s 61-45 victory over the Boerne Greyhounds Friday evening at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi.

With 2:13 left in the third quarter, Boerne was on a 5-0 run and had cut a nine-point deficit to 22-19. Penna brought back his starters ahead of schedule – his “first bunch” as he called them before the game – and they quickly built the lead back up to nine. Somerset slowly pulled away in the fourth quarter after that.

In the first half, Somerset’s “second bunch” outperformed the first. Starters Demetrio Zepeda, Jacob Hillyer, James Cantu, Luis Yanez, and Israel Vasquez played the first 4:09 of the first quarter and the first 4:57 of the second, outscoring Boerne 8-7, but the “second bunch” of Luke Villalpando, Jake Cantu, Steve Dorman, Will Harlos, and Devin Judkins outscored the Greyhounds 12-4, totaling to a 20-11 halftime lead. Seven different Bulldogs scored in the first half, although none scored more than four points.

Boerne (21-14), on the other hand, depended on Zachery Evans for scoring. Evans scored 9 of Boerne’s 11 first half points, as Somerset used their height to block shots and dominate the boards. Somerset lists six players at 6’5.

Boerne coach Kimble McHone responded by inserting 6’6 sophomore post Tyler Driskill. Driskill responded by scoring a career-high 11 points, including eight in the third quarter. But after Driskill’s free throw early in the fourth, Somerset shut him out the rest of the game.

Evans led all scorers with 16 points. Five Somerset players scored from eight to eleven points, a typical showing for the Bulldogs. Hillyer, scoreless in the first half, finished with a team-high eleven.

Somerset outscored Boerne 30-23 during the first three quarters and 31-22 during the fourth.

Somerset (33-3) will play for the Class 3A Region Championship Saturday afternoon against Stafford.

T-Birds put away upstart Churchill 88-69

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

If Clifton Ellis ever gets excited, he’s never led the public see it.

Coaching a fast-paced game, in a position held by some of the most volatile personalities known to the public at large, Ellis mans his station in front of the Wagner bench looking like a man waiting for his spouse outside the ladies room.

Of course, after one quarter of his region quarterfinal game against Churchill, Ellis’ top two scorers (Jordan Clarkson and Andre Roberson) had been held to three points combined – and Wagner still led 15-11.

What was there to yell about?

Pretty much nothing, as Wagner exploded for 32 points in the third quarter on their way to an 88-69 victory over the Churchill Chargers Monday night at Leslie “Goldie” Harris Gymnasium in Seguin.

Churchill (23-15) kept the game competitive through two quarters, leading 6-5 early and never trailing by more than seven in the first half. Mike Byron led his team with 14 points for the half, and helped his team beat the Wagner press by accepting lob passes from teammates trapped in double-teams. With Wagner ahead 41-34, Churchill coach Timothy Woods called timeout with 7.56 seconds left in the half to set up a play for freshman Taylor Sutlive. Sutlive delivered with a three point play to bring Churchill within 41-37 at the half.

Then Wagner went to work. They closed the third quarter on a 29-2 run, led by 13 points from Andre Roberson. Wagner’s speed and running game began to render Churchill’s height advantage irrelevant.

Devonte Hill added nine during the third quarter run. The highlight was a layup scored with his body behind the basket and facing midcourt; Hill reached under the basket to fingerroll the ball high off the glass and into the basket.

After three quarters, Wagner’s four point halftime lead became a 30 point lead, and Churchill was using substitutes from the far end of the bench.

Wagner (36-1) will face the only team they’ve lost to this season, the Laredo United Longhorns, Friday night in the region semifinals. Wagner defeated the Longhorns 87-83 at Laredo United on November 22nd, and lost United 72-67 on December 5th in the Lone Star Invitational. Wagner is ranked #2 in the state in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Poll; United is ranked #4.

Steele’s 23-5 third quarter leads to 67-51 victory, state tournament berth

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

The Steele Lady Knights have played varsity basketball for four years.

And each of the last three of those years, they’ll play varsity basketball at the Erwin Center in the State Tournament, after defeating the Corpus Christi Ray Lady Texans 67-51 Saturday afternoon at Littleton Gymnasium.

Steele joins Manfield Timberview, Frisco Wakeland, and Del Valle in the 4A State Tournament. Seeding will be announced Sunday; appears likely that Steele will be the third seed, and will play either Timberview or Del Valle in the state semifinals Thursday.

The game was a rematch of last year’s region champion game at Greehey Arena, which Ray led throughout until Meighan Simmons made a three-pointer with two seconds left to give Steele a 57-55 victory.

Again in 2010, Meighan Simmons, led the way. She scored 34 points, 11 in the first quarter and 14 in the third.

For the first half, Ray was competitive with the Knights. Steele built a 23-15 after one quarter, thanks to Elena Gumbs, who scored the game’s first six points, and Simmons’ 11. Then Ray started the second quarter on an 8-0 run, ignited by four points from Crystal Yeverino, to tie the game. Ray tied the game again at 25, and briefly took the lead at 28-27 on a Yeverino score. The teams went to the locker room with Steele clinging to a 35-34 lead.

Along the way, many fouls were called. At the half, Simmons had three fouls for Steele, and Yeverino, Ashley Viera, and Taysia Taylor, Ray’s three leading scorers, each had three fouls for Ray. After Ray took a 36-35 lead on a Yeverino putback to start the third, Steele went on a 12-0 run, with Simmons providing nine of the points. Later, Steele closed the quarter with a 9-0 run; leading 58-39 after three quarters, they could play ball control the rest of the game.

Whether Simmons’ game plan was to get Ray’s best players into foul trouble is hard to say, but that’s definitely how it worked out. Simmons shot 16 free throws for the game, making 13. Taylor, who averages 12.3 points and 6.9 rebounds a game, fouled out with 5:44 remaining in the game. Viera, who led the Texans with a 14 point average, 3.4 assists and four steals, fouled out with 4:39 left.

It is clear that Simmons involved her teammates when possible. Gumbs finished with 13 points, behind only Simmons and Yverino’s 16 for game, and Taylor Calvert scored 10. But almost every time Ray got close enough to make it interesting – midway through the first quarter, several times in the second, early in the third – Simmons would take over the ball game and score the points Steele needed to build the lead to a comfortable margin.

“That’s what a McDonald’s All-American does!” said Steele coach Kari Wallace after the game.

#12 Austin LBJ races past Boerne Champion 70-51

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

Boerne Champion started the game on a 7-0 run against the #12 team in the state, the defending Region Champion Austin LBJ Jaguars.

Sometimes, a surge like this from the underdog demoralizes an opponent and propels a team to an upset victory.

Sometimes, it just makes the favorite mad.

Friday night at San Marcos High School, LBJ got mad enough to earn a 70-51 victory over Boerne Champion, ending the Chargers’ season.

In the early going, Champion (24-12) attacked the basket with success, while LBJ shot three pointers to no avail. Then LBJ coach Freddie Roland called timeout with 5:45 left in the first quarter. The Jaguars shelved the three-point shooting – they finished by making only two the entire ballgame –worked the passing game and began to find open looks in the paint. By the time the first quarter was finished, LBJ had tied the game at 19.

The end of the quarter foreshadowed the remainder of the game. Although David Rogers scored with seconds left to put Champion ahead 19-17, LBJ went quickly into transition and found Deandre Byrd open for a layup half a second before the buzzer to tie the game again at 19.

The Chargers took the lead twice more, the second time at 23-22 on a pair of free throws by James Rogers, but LBJ closed the half on an 11-0 run. The coup de grace was administered by Robert Lee, who stole an inbound with one second remaining and dunked at the halftime buzzer. Johnson led 33-23 after two quarters.

It’s a tribute to Champion’s defense that they held LBJ scoreless through the first three minutes of the third quarter. It’s a tribute to the LBJ defense that they held Champion scoreless over the same stretch, after holding the Chargers to four points in the second quarter. LBJ’s stifling defense forced turnovers and snared rebounds if the Chargers happened to get a shot away. As the game wore on, more and more fast break opportunities presented themselves to LBJ, allowing the Jaguars to build the lead as high as 23 points in the fourth quarter.

Donald Dallas led Johnson with 21 points, followed by 14 from Deandre Byrd. Cameron Brown scored 12 and Robert Lee added 11.

James Rogers, a graduating senior, led Boerne Champion with 12 points. Andrew Abbott, another senior, scored seven points, all in the fourth quarter, for his highest scoring game since he poured in nine against McCollum on December 3rd.

Austin LBJ (23-7) will play Lake Travis in the third round on Monday. The game will be a rematch of last year’s Class 4A Region IV Championship game, won by Austin LBJ in overtime.

Quarters
BOERNE CHAMPION 19 4 7 21 - 51
AUSTIN LBJ 19 14 16 21 - 70

BOERNE CHAMPION SCORING: James Rogers 12, Connor Czar 10, David Rogers 10, Andrew Abbott 7, Madison Turner 5, Matt McKinney 3, Trevor Eckard 2, Dallas Quick 2, Marshal Kelly

Karnes City’s great basketball season ended last night, as they fell to Hallettsville 83-52 in the area round of the playoffs.

KC’s run might have ended, but we witnessed great sportsmanship after the game as both teams joined together center floor for prayer and the KC players wished their opponent the best of luck as they move on. Both teams were a class act.

Over the past two years, the Harper Ladyhorns have adjusted very well in the move from 1A to 2A, even advancing farther as a 2A team this year than in their 1A seasons.

But last night at Wimberley, they ran into the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs, and the result was a 57-31 win for Nixon-Smiley, and a trip to the 2A regional tournament on Friday in Seguin.
