#7 team in state closes with 11-2 run in 60-47 victory

The state-ranked Lytle Lady Pirates were getting all they could handle at Pearsall, leading only 49-45 with 5:02 remaining in the game.

Then Cheyenne Berry led her team on a 9-0 run, scoring the last seven points herself, and Lytle escaped with a 60-47 victory Tuesday night at Pearsall High School.

Berry finished with 36 points after being limited to four in the first quarter. Berry, who has signed with Stephen F. Austin, went 12 for 13 from the free throw line, including 7 of 8 for Lytle’s last seven points of the game.

Lytle (19-4, 2-0 in 29-3A) had a 47-32 lead midway through the third when the Lady Mavericks stampeded back into the contest. Eryn Freitas ignited a 13-2 run with a three-pointer, ultimately contributing seven points to the charge.

Along the way, Pearsall’s success led to a loss of composure for the Lady Pirates. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, with the Lytle lead down to 47-39, Berry fouled Tiffani Shaw near the basket sending her to the line. She then bounce the ball on the floor with such force it hit the bottom of the backboard, for which she was assessed a technical.

In an instant, Pearsall, trailing by eight in the fourth, had four free throws coming, after which they’d keep the basketball, against the #7 team in the state. It was a golden opportunity to make it a one-possession ballgame.

The Lady Mavericks missed all four free throws.

To their credit, Pearsall (9-9, 0-2 in 29-3A) didn’t wilt. Tiffani Shaw’s ensuing basket made it 47-41. Berry next took a steal for a driving layup, extending the lead to 49-41, but a putback by Sara Graf made it 49-43.

Then Lytle’s Ashley Perez, their second leading scorer with nine points, fouled out with 5:02 remaining. A protest by a Lytle assistant coach drew another technical, and this time Kim Puentes was in the game to convert both free throws, making it a 49-45 ballgame.

From there, however, it was all Lytle. A Naissa Guerrero basket pushed the Lytle lead to 51-45, and when they got the ball back, the Lady Pirates began to stall. They kept the ball in Berry’s hands, so when Pearsall had to foul, they had to foul Berry. Berry also contributed a defensive rebound and a steal to provide stops for her defense.

Panthers maul Pearsall 65-22 in last non-district game

A.K. Williams’ combination of height and quickness was too much for the Pearsall Mavericks as he led his team to a 65-22 victory Tuesday night at Pearsall High School.

Navarro (13-7), sporting a frontcourt of 6’3 Williams and 6’5 Todd Nicholson, used a 15-0 run to take a 24-6 lead. Williams and Nicholson scored six points apiece. Chris Arce came off the bench to add lethal quickness; late in the first, he scored seven straight points, four when he converted steals into layups on back-to-back possessions.

Pearsall (1-15) played a competitive first quarter, outscoring Navarro 11-10. Jeff Viesca came off the bench for four points to lead Pearsall as they took advantage of Nicholson going to the bench with foul trouble.

Then came the second half. Once again, Navarro used size and quickness to dominate the proceedings. Nicholson, Williams, and Travis Delany provided a powerful frontcourt, and Williams further frustrated Pearsall with his quickness; twice in the third quarter, Pearsall had to use timeouts to avoid backcourt violations. Delany delivered seven points, with Williams and Arce adding six apiece. At about the 5:00 minute mark of the third quarter, Navarro began a 21-0 run which last until there were 20 seconds left, at which point Marcos Hernandez drove the baseline after receiving an inbound pass and scored a layup.

The odd play of the night occurred with about three minutes left in the third. After Pearsall defenders knocked the ball away from a Navarro player, one of the officials caught it – before it went out of bounds. The official sheepishly blew his whistle, awarded the ball to Navarro, and play continued.

Navarro opens district 27-2A play Friday against Kenedy; Pearsall begins 29-3A play at Devine on Friday.

Thanks to all who made this year’s Pearsall Maverick Classic a success!

This year’s Maverick Classic in Pearsall had an international flavor, with Australia’s East Coast Dunkeroos winning the championship over Canton, TX. Jessica Ward, Emma Brennan, Alex Gailbraith, Laura Bamford-Cleland, Bronte Emanuel, Jessica Ward, Brittney Ainsworth, Siam Woods, Grace Amey, and Jessi Reeves did an awesome job, and are all pictured here with myself after winning the championship. Bamford, on the far right, was named MVP of the tournament.

I also want to thank Dean Sainsbury, coach of the Dunkeroos, for sending this picture. Dean, you are a class act and everyone fell in love with your team while you were here. Please give our love to the girls, and many safe travels.

On the boys side, it was a classic finish between Medina Valley and Somerset, with the Bulldogs from Somerset taking the title. The MVP award went to Demitrio Zepeda of the state-ranked Bulldogs.

On another note, please say a prayer for Pearsall Lady Mavs point guard Ashley Frausto, who hurt her knee in the closing seconds of their game vs. Cole.

Congratulations to Colleen Moss, Hondo’s 2009 Homecoming Queen!

There were no empty seats at Barry Field in Hondo for Friday night’s matchup between Hondo and Pearsall; both teams were fighting for the District 29-3A title. In fact, there was very little room to stand - it was a perfect night for football. And Hondo won the battle 34-26 to take control of the district race.

UIL shakes up 3A districts… again

Posted by Jay Tope on March 24, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Come this fall, the 3A districts in South Texas will be shaken up considerably.

The new changes, which were released last week, are as follows for basketball, cross-country, volleyball, softball, and baseball:

District 8-3A - Burnet, Llano and Liberty Hill stay in this district, and are joined by Austin Vandegrift and Leander Rouse.

District 29-3A - This district now has Carrizo Springs, Crystal City, Devine, Hondo, Lytle, and Pearsall. Bandera will move to 30-3A, which was an open district, Boerne High School (not to be confused with Boerne Champion), will NOT be in 29-3A as was originally planned.

District 30-3A - This previously open district will have Bandera, Boerne, Canyon Lake, Fredericksburg, Ingram Tom Moore, and Wimberley.

In football, 8-3A will be the same as it was in 2008-2008, with the addition of Leander Rouse. Boerne and Austin Vandegrift will play independent football schedules. 29-3A will be the same as 2008-2009; and 30-3A will be open.

Good luck to everyone on today’s TAKS test!

Posted by Jay Tope on March 3, 2009 at 8:04 am

Everyone here at SAsports.com wishes the best for the freshman, sophomores, and juniors who are taking the TAKS test today. Think positively, eliminate distractions, and success will follow.

God bless you guys!
