Rose Ann Martinez takes over McCollum volleyball

Posted by Jay Tope on July 1, 2009 at 7:35 am

Holmes head volleyball coach Rose Ann Martinez, who has coached the Huskies for the past several years, has now accepted the same position at McCollum High School in the Harlandale ISD.

It marks a return to her roots, as Martinez is a 1989 Harlandale graduate. She also coached at Harlandale a decade ago, serving as a volleyball assistant and head basketball coach.

The move also opens up the Holmes head volleyball position. We will have the first word on that when the news breaks.

Thursday’s Softball Tour Stop brought us into Uvalde, as the Lobos…

… took on the McCollum Cowgirls in a key 29-4A clash. Both teams had one-run heartbreaking losses on Tuesday.

It was also Parent Night; here, Macy Ybarra smiles for the crowd and cameras with her parents.

Even the JV players and parents were introduced; yes they’re twins…

Jacqueline Aguillen was the starting pitcher for McCollum.

Lyndi Smith started and went the distance for Uvalde. The conditions weren’t perfect; it hit 100 degrees, and winds gusted in the early part of the game.

Give Coach Gigi Beza a lot of credit; she took over as head coach without warning, and has the Lobos playing well, with an eye on the playoffs.

McCollum, down 7 early in fourth, falls 69-42 to Austin LBJ

On December 10, 2008, the McCollum Cowboys beat the Johnson Jaguars by a score of 63-50.

Of course, that was San Antonio Johnson, a brand new school, not Austin Johnson, a perennial basketball power.

Faced with the older Austin LBJ, McCollum kept it interesting for three quarters until the Jaguars’ press and man-to-man defense wore them down. Johnson closed the game with a 26-6 run on their way to a 69-42 victory over McCollum in the Class 4A Region IV Semifinals Friday night at Greehey Arena.

The Jaguars (27-7) pressed most of the night and played man-to-man once McCollum got to the front court. The Cowboys managed to break the press early, tying the game at 9 near the end of the first quarter. The Jaguars built the lead as high as seven twice before free throws by Gabriel Lujan cut the lead to 21-16 at the half.

Johnson intensified the press in the third quarter, then when in a halfcourt set, they fed the ball to 6’8 forward Tim Dailey and 6’4 forward Kerry Hyder. Dailey scored 8 and Hyder scored 9.

But McCollum (18-18) kept up with 4 three-pointers from Jacob Mendoza. After outscoring McCollum 21-15 in the first half, Johnson outscored the Cowboys 22-18 in the third quarter, extending their lead to 43-33.

Mendoza hit a three early in the fourth to cut the lead to 43-36, but LBJ immediately began putting the game away. They continued feeding Dailey inside and put the clamps on Mendoza for the rest of the game.

Mendoza finished with a game-high 22 points, his highest scoring game of the playoffs. No other Cowboy scored more than 7.

Dailey led the Jaguars with 20 points, followed by Hyder with 17 and Eric Robinson with 15.

LBJ will play Lake Travis for a berth in the state tournament Saturday morning beginning at 11 a.m.

Good luck to everyone on today’s TAKS test!
