Junior’s 11 second quarter points lead Warren to 54-41 victory
by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer
Trailing after one quarter, Warren outscored Marshall 20-2 in the second quarter of a 54-41 victory Wednesday night at the Paul Taylor Field House.
Warren (16-20, 8-8 in 28-5A) went into Wednesday’s game knowing they would be the fourth seed in 28-5A; their first round playoff game with defending region champion and current 27-5A champ Wagner is set for Monday night at 7:30 at the UTSA Convocation Center.
Marshall (12-19, 5-11) started the game running their trademark deliberate offensive, and enjoyed success thanks to fine outside shooting. Sam Keairnes, who averaged 3.7 points a ball game before Wednesday, scored eight in the first quarter, including a pair of threes. Keairnes would not score again in the contest, yet still finished the night as Marshall’s leading scorer. Anthony Puente also scored a trey in the first.
Warren coach Jim Weaver appeared ready to apply Somerset’s strategy when the substituted for all five of their starters with 4:03 remaining in the first quarter. (Somerset uses five players for the first half of each quarter, then five others for the second half.) If this was truly Weaver’s attempt, he abandoned that idea when he returned Sean Harris to the game with 1:37 left in the first.
Marshall led 15-7 after one quarter – then came the second. The Warriors started the quarter with an 8-0 run to tie the game. Marshall reclaimed the lead at 17-15 on free throws by A.J. Hudson, but lost it for the night when Warren closed the half on a 12-0 run. Chris Freeman scored 11 of Warren’s 20 second quarter points; Marques Mendoza added five. Freeman and Harris each dunked during the ballgame for Warren: Freeman late in the second quarter, Harris early in the third.
Warren was without the services of senior Akhenaton Zakariyyaa, who sat next to the Warren bench with a heavy cast on his left leg.

Marshall scores 21 in first quarter of 64-46 victory over Brandeis
by Mark Kusenberger

Jordan Collazo scored 14 first half points in leading the run-and-gun Rams to a 64-46 victory over the Brandeis Broncos Saturday evening at the Paul Taylor Fieldhouse.
Marshall (19-12, 11-3 in 28-5A) dictated tempo the entire first half, helped by several steals from Tiffany Rosas and Heather Garza. Collazo was leading the team with five points when she committed her second foul with 2:02 remaining in the first quarter. When she returned to the game, she scored 9 of Marshall’s 17 second quarter points, helping build the team’s lead to 38-16 late in the second quarter. Rosas added eight points and Jenna Barnett contributed seven to Marshall’s first half effort.
The Lady Rams substituted freely in the second half, but kept the fast-paced tempo going. Although Marshall scored 26 second half points, only one Lady Rams scored more than four: Karly Gonzales had six.
Brandeis’s scoring was led by junior Alexis Vick. Vick finished with a team-high ten points; her six in the first half made her the only Lady Broncos to exceed three points for the first two quarters. Sophomore Alyssa Browne added nine points, and junior Mina Harris scored eight, all in the third quarter.
Brandeis (14-15, 3-10 in 28-5A) has games remaining against Jay, O’Connor and Warren.

The Marshall Rams and Taft Raiders battled at Farris Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

And both defenses took care of business, as the two teams battled to a scoreless tie thanks to goalkeepers Justin Cordova and Thomas Williams. Marshall is now 0-2-2 in District 28-5A play; Taft’s district record is 1-0-3.

Marshall stays tied for second with 55-31 victory
by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer
The Marshall Lady Rams limited Taft to six first half points on their way to a 55-31 victory Saturday afternoon at the Paul Taylor Field House.
Marshall (17-12, 9-3 in 28-5A) remained tied in the loss column with O’Connor for second place. The teams split their meetings in district play.
Marshall started the game on a 9-0, with buckets by four different Lady Rams. Taft got their first points halfway through the first quarter on a three from Josalyn Madrigal. LaSondra Pryce’s second basket was the only Marshall score in the last half of the quarter; Marshall led 11-3 after one.
Madrigal’s second trey brought Taft within 11-6 early in the second, then Marshall closed the half on an 8-0 run. Jordan Collazo and Lasondra Pryce each scored six for Marshall, and the Rams led 19-6 after a half.
Both defenses started strong defense in the first half; Taft did limit Marshall to eight field goals in the first half. The Raiders’ problem was that Marshall limited them to two field goals – both three pointers by Josalyn Madrigal.
The second half was a different story. As Coach Erin Albrecht exhorted her team, “Push! Push!” the Lady Rams picked up the game’s tempo, and Taft never got control back. When Danielle Dye scored off an assist from Monet Neal, it was Taft’s first points by a player besides Madrigal. But Marshall won the rest of the quarter 14-6 on the way to a 33-14 lead.
By the time it was over, ten different Marshall players had scored. After outscoring Taft 19-6 in the first half, they outscored them 14-8 in the third and 22-17 in the fourth, sharing the offensive wealth while shutting down any Taft players without the initials J.M.
The Lady Rams featured four players who scored between 7 and 12 points; Heather Garza scored 10 of her team-leading 12 in the second half. Over halfway through the fourth quarter, Madrigal had scored 19 of Taft’s 21 points. Neal scored all seven of her points in the last four minutes of the games; the rest of the Raiders combined for five points.
Taft (8-18, 3-9 in 28-5A) was eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.

Warren ups winning streak to five with 61-52 victory over Marshall
by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer
The Warriors are officially back in the playoff race.
After starting the season 5-14, including an 0-5 start in district, Warren has won five straight, including Saturday afternoon’s 61-52 victory over the Marshall Lady Rams at the Paul Taylor Field House.
The win, combined with Clark’s later loss to Stevens, put Warren one game behind 6-4 Clark for the final playoff berth in District 28-5A. Marshall (15-12, 7-3 in 28-5A) has now lost three straight, and is tied for second with O’Connor, 2 ½ games behind district leader Jay.
The first half was closely contested, as Warren led 14-10 after one quarter, then Marshall went on a 7-2 run to take the lead. Warren responded with an 8-1 run, then Marshall went on a 5-1 run to get within two points.
Warren was led by Samara Williams’ 10 points and Shakelia Coleman’s 8 points in the first half. Marshall had five players contribute from three to seven points.
Warren started the second half with an 8-0 run, nearly putting the game out of reach. Warren led 36-26 when Marshall’s Jordan Collazo led her team on a 9-2 run with a pair of three-pointers, but Warren responded with a 12-4 run to built the lead to 53-42. Williams, shut out in the third quarter, scored seven during the clinching run; Marshall was never within two possessions the rest of the game.
Williams and Coleman kept their scoring hands in the second half, and once Lauren Martinez got going – she scored nine points in the second half, including 7 for 9 free throw shooting - the Warriors were in control.
In a video moment for YouTube, with 1:50 left in the second quarter, Warren’s Breon Brothers fell backwards on defense, but converted her fall into a backwards somersault.

17-0 run leads Warren to 52-36 victory
by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer
The Marshall Rams had a plan.
Facing a Warren team with which they were tied at 3-4 in the district standings, Marshall kept the tempo under control, playing halfcourt, passing until a three-pointer was open.
It was still working after Sam Keairnes made two free throws, extending Marshall’s lead to 22-18.
Then the Warriors (12-14, 4-4 in 28-5A) asserted their athleticism, Marshall’s three-point shooting went cold, and Warren took off on a 17-0 run. The Warriors went on to win 52-36 Friday evening at the Paul Taylor Field House.
Warren’s Jordan Corona nailed a three to cut the deficit to 22-21, then free throws by Akhenaton Zakariyyaa put the Warriors ahead 23-22 going into the locker rooms. Chris Freeman kept the momentum going with nine third quarter points. Zakariyyaa and Freeman each scored 12 to lead the Warriors.
In the beginning, Marshall (10-13, 3-5 in 28-5A) was depending on three-pointers from Jordan Ng. Moretta scored Marshall’s first three pointer, then Ng scored the next nine Marshall points. Moretta, Cooper Sylestine, and A.J. Hudson provided assists on Ng’s baskets.
For all their diligence, Marshall still trailed by two, 14-12, after one quarter. Ng led all scorers with 16 points – including four threes, naturally – and Moretta added nine – all on threes – but the rest of the Rams scored only 11. Marshall converted 12 fields goal, 8 of which were threes, but Warren scored 17 field goals, 7 of which were threes. Marques Mendoza and Isaac Simmons each hit a pair of treys; six different Warriors scored five points or more in the game.
With Jay having won the early game Friday, Warren and Marshall knew that the winner of their game would stay within one game of Jay for fourth place, while the loser would fall two games back as 28-5A completes their first round of district games this weekend.
