Edison boys roll to first district victory

21 point first quarter lets Golden Bears coast to 54-43 victory over Lanier

by Mark Kusenberger

Edison came into Monday’s evening ballgame against Lanier on a downturn.

A playoff team last year, Edison was 3-17, and on a nine-game losing streak. On top of it all, the Golden Bears were starting three sophomores.

Obviously, they figured something out Monday.

Edison stormed out to 21-7 lead on their way to a 54-43 victory over the Voks at the Alamo Convocation Center.

Edison (4-17, 1-3 in 28-4A) pushed the tempo to start the game, led by Leroy Olivares, who raced through the Lanier defense for nine first quarter points. Edison had nine field goals to Lanier’s one in the quarter; Lanier went 5 of 8 from the free throw line to stay within two touchdowns.

Lanier (8-15, 2-2 in 28-4A) managed to slow down the tempo in the second quarter and use their post player Juan DeLeon to control the game. DeLeon finished with a game high 23 points; he went 11 of 15 from the free throw line, and frustrated attempts to defend him resulted in Edison sophomore posts David Perez and Michael Espina fouling out.

And for all DeLeon’s excellence, he only allowed Lanier to stay even with Edison over the last three quarters. Lanier outscored Edison only 36-33 after the first quarter.

Olivares, a senior, led Edison with 16 points along with sophomore Arty Vela; Vela made his varsity debut as a freshman during Edison’s playoff game against Boerne Champion. Marco Guerrero, another sophomore, added 12 points.

With the loss, Lanier fell into a three-way tie with Kennedy and Burbank for third in 28-4A.

At 1-3 in district, Edison is one game behind those three teams. But the way they played Monday, they don’t look like a team that will scuffle to catch Lanier, Kennedy, and/or Burbank.

With sophomores contributing 38 of the 54 points against Lanier, the Golden Bears looked like a team that could challenge leaders Brackenridge and Fox Tech for a district title.

Lady Golden Bears take over first place

18-point fourth quarter key to 47-44 victory over Lanier

Victoria Myers led Edison with 19 points, including six in the decisive fourth quarter, as the Edison Lady Golden Bears took over first place in 28-4A with a 47-44 victory over the Lanier Lady Voks Monday afternoon at the Alamo Convocation Center.

Myers scored seven points in the first quarter and six more in the fourth. Vivian Cervantes scored nine for the game, and contributed a key rebound and steal in the last two minutes.

Edison (10-12, 6-0 in 28-4A) trailed 30-27 when Edison coach Angie Alonzo called timeout with 1:24 left in the third quarter. The Lady Golden Bears responded with a 10-0, after which Edison led 37-30 and Lanier was forced to foul. Ten of Edison’s last twelve points on the game were scored from the free throw line, including the last two points of their 10-0 run.

Lanier (11-13, 5-1 in 28-4A) dictated a slower pace in the second and third quarter, which allowed them to use their height advantage over Edison. However, Edison’s aggressiveness on offense got Jackie Acosta and Ashley Carrizal into foul trouble. Acosta fouled out with 6:06 remaining in the game; Carrizal fouled out with 1:46 left. Lanier was whistled for 21 fouls compared to Edison’s 10. After Lanier outscored Edison 7-3 from the line in the first half, Edison outscored Lanier 14-5 from the stripe in the second half.

The win puts Edison alone in first place, one game ahead of Lanier and Burbank. Lanier defeated Burbank earlier in district play; Edison faces Burbank Friday afternoon. District 28-4A will completed their first round of play Friday.

Edison, who as recently as 2006-07 were 4-20, struggled through a 4-12 non-district run, but faced seven 5A schools and three out-of-state schools. They went 2-8 against those teams, defeating Midland Lee and the Ursline Academy of Canada. Lanier played six games against 5A schools, going 0-6.

Samantha Continas’ 21 points lead Voks to 58-47 victory over Burbank

In a contest for a share of first place in 28-4A, the Lanier Lady Voks claimed a 58-47 victory over the Burbank Lady Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon at the Alamo Convocation Center.

The Voks’ Samantha Cortinas led all scorers with 21 points, including 9 of 14 shooting from the free throws line. Ashley Carrizal scored 14, including 8 of 10 shooting from the free throw line. Zoie Cuellar added 12.

Lanier (9-12, 3-0 in 28-4A) played an aggressive style, crowding the passing lanes on defense and attacking the basket on offense. As a result, Burbank was whistled for 24 fouls to Lanier’s 14, and Lanier made 24 of 40 free throws to Burbank’s 10 of 18. Two Burbank starters, Sam Webb and Kandace Regalado, fouled out of the game. Both sides dove for loose balls throughout the game.

Burbank (10-10, 2-1 in 28-4A) jumped to a 4-0 lead on baskets by Webb and Monique Alvarado, then Lanier closed out the quarter with a 12-0 run. After Valeria Aziaga scored a three to cut the lead to 12-7, Lanier responded with a 9-0 run to lead 21-7. Burbank closed within 23-15, helped by putbacks from Regalado and Alvarado, then went on an 8-0 to tie the game. Beverley Zapata’s basket gave Lanier a 25-23 halftime lead.

Lanier led 28-25 with 4:40 left in the third when Webb, scored score 10 for Burbank in the first half went to the bench with her third foul. Lanier took advantage and went on a 14-0 run to seal the game. Cuellar scored 8 points during the third quarter, including a steal which she took for a layup. Burbank was never closer than 9 points the rest of the game.

Bulldogs overcome foul trouble to defeat Lanier 51-49

by Mark Kusenberger

Burbank coach Herbert Jackson had to be getting nervous.

His team’s lead over Lanier, which was 43-34 with 6 minutes left in the game, was down to 50-49 with one minute left, and Dagoberto Garcia and Randall Webb had each fouled out of the game.

But rebounds by Brandon Alvarez and Ralph Chavez produced key stops and allowed Burbank to hold on for a 51-49 win over Lanier Tuesday afternoon at Alamo Gym.

Burbank (10-9, 1-0 in 28-4A) spent the entire game building up leads, then fending off Lanier rallies.

The Bulldogs led 25-18 at the half, propelled by Ralph Chavez’s 9 points. Lanier (4-12, 0-1 in 28-4A) spent the third quarter chipping away at the lead, led by 8 points from Juan Deleon, who went 4 for 4 from the free throw line in the third, and 6 from Leroy Lozano. Lozano’s last two points closed Lanier within 36-34 at the end of three.

Burbank opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run on a three-pointer by Chavez, a putback by Webb, and a steal taken for a layup by Chavez. But the 43-34 lead was not safe yet, and a Troy Lopez three, with the assist coming from Lozano, brought Lanier within one at 46-45.

Webb’s deuce – off a Chavez assist – and two free throws from Acosta built the Bulldog lead to 50-45, but after Garcia fouled out, Lanier got baskets from Daniel Cruz and Kevin Gutierrez, both coming off assists from Lopez, to make it a one-point game again at 50-49. Webb fouled out trying to defend Gutierrez’s score, but Gutierrez missed the potential tying free throw. After that, the Burbank defense took over.

Ralph Chavez led all scorers with 17, shooting 4 of 9 from the free throw line and sinking a three-pointer. Troy Lopez led Lanier with 16, 8 in each half, with 12 of his points coming on three-pointers.

LANIER SCORING: Troy Lopez 16, Juan Deleon 10, Daniel Cruz 9, Leroy Lozano 6, Joseph Tinajero 5, Kevin Gutierrez 2, Josh Olivares 1, Martin Sanchez, Paul Burciaga, Carlos Ibarra

BURBANK SCORING: Ralph Chavez 17, Randall Webb 10, Jacob Acosta 10, Jason Ainsworth 9, Dagoberto Garcia 4, Miguel Arevalo 1, Jacob Martinez, Brandon Alvarez

It’s hard to believe that something this successful won’t be happening again.

Saturday night this year’s Chili Bowl was played; Lanier won the game, but the story was about the end of the Chili Bowl, and the last football game ever for the Fox Tech Buffaloes.

Fox Tech loses game, playoff berth, and football program

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

It was the Darkest Night in the History of San Antonio High School Football.

What else can you say when a rivalry game, which never drew less than 9000 fans and occasionally drew over 20,000, a rivalry that inspired the programs involved through season both successful and difficult, comes to an abrupt end?

The Fox Tech Buffaloes were playing with determined, if heavy, hearts, but their archrival Lanier Voks took better advantage of their opponents’ mistakes, resulting in a 30-14 Lanier victory Saturday night in front of a packed house at Alamo Stadium.

Fox Tech (3-7, 3-4 in 28-4A) had a chance to make the playoffs with a victory; the loss makes their 2009 Chili Bowl the last football game Fox Tech will play. The loss puts Edison into the playoffs, where they will play Clemens. It also sets Kennedy’s opening round matchup with Tivy.

Before the game began, it was clear things would be different. Where the home school normally sends the honor guard to midfield with the United States and Texas flags, for this game, each team sent their honor guard. There could no more powerful symbol of what each team was losing with the end of this rivalry.

During the action, Fox Tech’s Emilio Moreno intercepted a Jonathan Andrade pass late in the first quarter. The Buffaloes, who threw deep the entire game, connected when Mark Morales found George Mackey for a 47 yard reception. A late hit moved the ball to the Lanier 11, where Justin Guerrero took the ball in to give Fox Tech a 7-0 lead with 10:46 left in the half.

Lanier (4-6, 4-3 in 28-4A) responded with a classic display of smash-mouth football. A 15 play, 70 yard drive consuming 7:11 and including three 3rd-down conversion was capped by Andrade’s two-yard touchdown run. Chris Draeger blocked the extra point, allowing Fox Tech to retain the lead at 7-6.

Buffalo Carlos Rodriguez intercepted Andrade with 1:05 remaining, and Morales threw deep again. This time it was Lanier with the takeaway, as Rudy Ray Cardenas returned the interception to the Fox Tech 9 with 13 seconds left in the half. On the last play of the half, Andrade found Jose Neri, who battled his way to the end zone, putting Lanier ahead. Jonathan Jaramillo ran over for a two-point conversion, and Lanier led 14-7 at intermission.

Fox Tech would tie it on the opening drive of the second half when Morales found Mackey for a 30 yard scoring pass; Jesus Maldonado’s extra point tied the game at 14. But when Fox Tech forced a punt, and Jesse Clark returned it to the Lanier 47, they could not capitalize. Daniel Cruz intercepted Morales, setting up Lanier at their own 7.

This time, Lanier didn’t need a long, grinding drive. Sophomore Troy Brown ran 33 yard on the first play, then Emilio Garza took the ball the other 60 on the second play, giving Lanier back the lead at 22-14 (Lanier went for two and Andrade completed his pass to Jaramillo.)

That play put control in Lanier’s hands the rest of the way. Even a failed fake punt by the Voks at their own 11 yard line didn’t backfire, as the Lanier defense turned away Fox Tech on 3rd and 4th down. The clincher came in the fourth quarter on Brown’s 64-yard touchdown run; Lanier went for two yet again, this time with Andrade finding freshman Isaac Cervantes for the final 30-14 margin.

Afterwards, the crowd dissipated amazing quickly, but the media rush had barely begun. Losing coach Denny Peel was dealing with a small army of media, armed with notepads and television cameras. Winning coach Don Gatian looked on sympathetically, facing nowhere near the same media rush.

It was a strange thing that so few were seeking out the winning coach. But then, there will be a Lanier football next season, and given the youth of Gatian’s team, they will be a likely playoff team.

But the Fox Tech marching band played for likely the last time. The red and white football uniforms will no longer be of any use to Fox Tech High School.

And what will become of the fourth sign from the left, on display between levels of the Alamo Stadium press box, which lists Fox Tech alongside its companion high schools Brackenridge, Burbank, Edison, Sam Houston, Highlands, Jefferson, and finally, Lanier?

Sadly, it won’t be required at Alamo Stadium anymore, for the Fox Tech Buffaloes have played their last football game.
