Blocked shots lead Judson to 39-37 victory over Stevens
by Mark Kusenberger

Mike Stewart’s two free throws with 4.94 seconds left sealed a 39-37 Judson victory over the Stevens Falcons Tuesday evening at the UTSA Convocation Center.
The gain was a defensive marvel, with shot blockers Stuart Lagerson and Thurman McNeil matching stuffs with Mark Cravens and Joe Monroe. Countless shots were left unattempted because of each team’s inside presence.
Judson (30-6) stormed out to a 17-6 after one quarter, then held on for dear life to ultimately earn the victory. Judson, which enjoyed an 11-0 run during the quarter, got a pair of three-pointers each from Stewart and Tevin Russell.
Then the Stevens defense went to work. With a combination of aggressive defense and patient offense, Stevens (18-15) whittled away at the Judson lead. Sophomore Marcus Roper matched the Judson second quarter total by himself with five. Stevens came within four before baskets by Stewart and McNeil built the Judson lead back up to 23-15. Stevens had outscored Judson 9-2 in the second quarter before the Rockets’ last two baskets.
But the Falcons stayed with the plan in the second half. Stevens closed the third quarter on a 9-0 run, taking the lead on free throws by Javon Joseph. With about 30 seconds left in the quarter, Uche Ofoegbu made a free throw, then Roper stole Judson’s inbound pass and sank a three from the corner. In an instant, Judson lead went from 28-23 to 28-27; after Joseph’s free throws, Stevens led 29-28 after the third quarter.
However, Judson quickly regained the lead when Stewart found Russell opened for a three; it was good, putting Judson ahead 31-29. Judson build the lead up to 35-30 before Stevens clawed within one thanks for four points from Cravens. Judson’s Cameron Griffin hit two free throws while Stevens’ Uche Ofoegbu responded making one of two. Stevens had a chance, but with 4.94 seconds left, Lagerson blocked the shot and Stewart rebounded, drawing a crowd and setting up the clinching free throws.
Monroe scored with one second left for Stevens to cut the margin to 39-37, but from there Judson simply had to inbound the ball without incident to preserve the win.
Judson attempted only 29 field goals for the game, making 14.
Judson will play Austin Akins, who defeated Madison in overtime Monday night, in the area round later in the week.

You knew what the atmosphere was going to be like for a Wagner-Judson basketball match-up.

And neither team disappointed, as Wagner stayed unbeaten in District 27-5A with a 72-57 win over the Judson Rockets at Judson High School.

For a time on Friday night, it looked like the Stevens Falcons were going to run the Judson Rockets out of the playoffs in the first round for the second straight year.

But Judson did what so many Judson teams have done in the past - found a way to win. Which means the Rockets now advance to the area round, where they will take on longtime rival Austin Westlake at a place and site to be determined.

Two-hundred-yard rusher lead Judson to 31-6 victory
by Mark Kusenberger

With the rededication of Rutledge Stadium, D.W. Rutledge’s old team put on a vintage performance, dominating the line of scrimmage in a 31-6 victory over the Wagner Thunderbirds Thursday night.
Wagner’s strong start to the season, including convincing wins over Smithson Valley and Tivy, suggested that Wagner might be ready to take over the district from their sister school. The Thunderbirds looked ready to follow through on that promise when their defense forced a three-and-out on Judson’s opening possession. Kali Rashaad returned the resulting punt 58 yards, then two plays later caught a 28 yard touchdown pass from Seth Pierce, staking Wagner to a 6-0 lead.
The lead stayed a 6-0 because Richard Griffin charged in from the right side to block the point after. Then on Judson’s first play from scrimmage, Quaylon Jones ran 67 yards for a touchdown. Donato San Filippo kicked the conversion, and Judson had a 7-6 lead.
The Rockets would never relinquish it. Judson (3-2, 2-0 in 27-5A) stopped Wagner’s next possession with an interception by Darnell Bohannan-Bay. Next, Judson drove 12 plays for a 37-yard field goal from San Filippo, extending Judson lead to 10-6. The defense stepped up again to stop David Glasco on a fourth-and-one, then Judson drove 11 plays for a touchdown, with Jones scoring from 2 yards out to extend the Judson lead to 17-6.
Wagner (3-2, 1-1 in 27-5A) had one more chance to make a contest of it before half, but stalled at the Judson 6. David Glasco ran the ball for 20 of Wagner’s first 26 plays from scrimmage, but faced with 2nd and goal at the Judson 6, Wagner threw incomplete three times, coming away without a score and trailing 17-6 at halftime.
From then on, Judson dictated the game. While Judson rotated Jones (19 carries for 215 yards and 3 touchdowns) with Gabriel Hilliard (13 carries for 115 yards and a touchdown), Wagner left all the running to Glasco (30 carries for 144 yards, no touchdowns.) While Wagner couldn’t get Glasco untracked (only 5 of Glasco’s carries went for more than 10 yards, with the long run going 21), Judson’s offensive line of C.J. Boyd, Austin Lamy, Joshua Fowler, Ricky James, Kevin Slaughter, and Colten Wiemers consistently opened gaping holes in Wagner’s defense.
Judson did it on a week where a flu bug went through the locker room, leaving the Rockets challenged to field enough players for a proper practice. They also did it with minimal – if any – passing yards. Jordan Montgomery had 2 touches for 12 yards, and either play could have been ruled a forward pass or an overhand lateral. Call them laterals, and Judson has no yards passing on the game.
Through the years, pundits in greater San Antonio have been wondering when the Judson Rockets would pass the torch to the next great team.
Thursday, the Rockets made a case for keeping that torch for another year.

It was a night to honor the namesake of Judson’s stadium, former coach D.W. Rutledge.

And after Wagner shot out to a 6-0 lead, the Judson Rockets football team honored Rutledge by scoring 31 unanswered points in their 31-6 win over the Thunderbirds Thursday evening.

Judson Coach Jim Rackley insisted that his team wasn’t looking past South San to next week’s game against the Wagner Thunderbirds.

And by the end of the evening, no one doubted his words as Judson defeated South San 51-14 Thursday at Rutledge Stadium.

Rockets snap 2-game losing streak with 51-14 victory over South San
by Mark Kusenberger

The Judson Rockets were coming off a fourth quarter collapse against Pflugerville, a game in which the team led in the third quarter before losing 42-21.
According to Coach Jim Rackley, they’d had a great week of practice.
It all added up to a tough night for the South San Bobcats, as Judson defeated South San 51-14 Thursday night at Rutledge Stadium.
Quaylon Jones (21-186, 3 TDs) and Arturo Reyes (8-111, 1 TD) both went over the 100 yard mark rushing, while Jordan Montgomery finished with 4 receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown.
As a team, Judson (2-2, 1-0 in 27-5A) tallied 519 yards on 60 plays, including 299 yards in the first half. The Rockets also held South San to 28 yards on 17 plays in the first half. Judson’s first 5 possessions ended in touchdowns, while South San managed only one first down as Judson led 34-0 at the half.
In a game where the Bobcats needed to play ball control and shorten the contests, the first half couldn’t have gone more wrong. Judson won the opening coin toss and drove 12 plays for a touchdown, with Cody Boswell finding Colten Wiemers for a 7 yard touchdown pass. After forcing a three-and-out, Judson drove down the field again, converting a 4th and 1 with a 29 yard touchdown run by Jones.
Of Judson’s 10 possessions, only the 6th (end of the half) and the 9th (punt with 4:11 remaining in fourth) didn’t end with a Judson touchdown.
For their part, the Bobcats showed impressive grit. Six players started on both offense and defense for South San (2-2, 0-1 in 27-5A), and all finished the game. As Judson established control, the Rockets sent in substitutes, but the Bobcats stayed with their starters. South San’s first six possessions all ended in punts – with only one first down along the way – then the seventh ended with a failed 4th down conversation and the eighth ended when Brandon Reid intercepted a Joe Morales pass inside the Judson 5.
This did set up fast-paced final minute.
South San forced a three-and-out, then put together a 10-play, 41 yard drive, with Morales running in from 4 yards out to bring South San within 44-7 with 41 seconds left.
Judson, attempting to run out the clock, gave the ball to Arturo Reyes on a dive play, and Reyes rambled 64 yards for a touchdown, making it 51-7 with 14 seconds left.
Morales, at 5 foot 5 a fourth-year starter, including the two years West Campus was open, completed a 6-yard pass to Mario Camarillo, then ran a hook-and-ladder variation, with pass recipient Ruben Ugalde and lateral recipient Jordan Marin combining for a 25 yard gain. Morales’ final heave to the end zone found a leaping Ugalde, who held on as he landed on his back for the final touchdown as time expired.
