15-0 fourth quarter run propels Rattlers to 72-61 victory over Johnson

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

Tre Demps poured in 20 points, 14 in the second half, to lead the Reagan Rattlers to a 72-61 victory over the Johnson Jaguars Wednesday evening at Littleton Gym.

The victory was the Rattlers’ fifth straight and put Reagan (20-10, 8-6 in 26-5A) into a tie for fourth place in the district, an improbable scenario, given that the team once stood at 3-6 in district play and has coped with the controversy which led to former head coach Jimmy Littleton’s resignation.

The game featured a fast paced first half, where only three fouls were called. Johnson (18-16, 5-10 in 26-5A) had lost 8 of 10 games going into Wednesday, but started strong, thanks to seven first quarter points from Daryl Threat. The Jaguars led 14-9 when Matt Medell found Connor Knight under the basket for a buzzer-beating layup, bringing Reagan within 14-11.

Reagan took their first lead on a four-point play, where Brad Coulter made the basket, drew a rare foul, and missed the free throw, but Max Yon put back the rebound to break a 23-23 tie. After the game was tied again at 25 and 28, Johnson led 30-28 on Justin Hammonds’ score from a Threat assist. Then Yon scored to tie the game, and Bryan Hardy drove for another buzzer beater, sending Reagan to the locker room leading 32-30. Chris Zurcher provided 10 second quarter points for the Jaguars.

Threat was a real force in the third quarter, scoring 14 of Johnson’s 19 points in the frame. After the lead changed on seven straight baskets, Anthony Walker’s free throw tied the game at 49. Matt Medell scored to put Reagan ahead again, then Demps hit a buzzer-beating three – Reagan’s third buzzer-beating field goal of the game – to extend Reagan’s lead to 54-49 at the end of three.

Zurcher scored to bring Johnson within 54-51, but it turned out to be Johnson’s last hurrah. Reagan put the game away for good with a 15-0 run, to which Demps contributed nine points. The run only ended when Reagan interim coach Norm Galyon put in his bench players to finish out the game.

Reagan’s win over Johnson, combined with Lee’s earlier loss to Madison, created a tie for fourth between Lee and Reagan; each team is one-and-a-half games behind third place Churchill. Reagan must play district co-leaders MacArthur and Madison in their last two games; Lee faces Smithson Valley and Churchill. Lee and Reagan split their district meetings.

Burke scores 30 to lead Roosevelt to 70-61 win over Johnson

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

Darian Burke scored 21 points in the first half on his way to 30 for the game in leading the Roosevelt Rough Riders to a 70-61 victory over the Johnson Jaguars Saturday afternoon at Littleton Gym.

Roosevelt (15-14, 5-8 in 26-5A) fell behind 5-2 early before going on a 10-2 run to take the lead. A steal followed by a driving layup from Kevin Johnson started the rally, during which all five of the Roosevelt starters scored.

Burke, it turned out, was on his way to an 11 point first quarter. For much of the game, it appeared Roosevelt would need every last point Burke could muster. Johnson (18-15, 5-9 in 26-5A) came within one point at the end of the first quarter and was that close twice in the third quarter. Free throws by Burke gave Roosevelt space after Johnson pulled within 39-38, and a 6-0 run made a 41-40 lead into a 47-40 lead.

But although Johnson never took the lead in the second half, Roosevelt couldn’t put the Jags away until late. An 8-2 Johnson run early in the fourth cut an 8-point Roosevelt lead to 56-54. After Roosevelt built the lead back up to 64-57, Chris Zurcher scored back-to-back buckets to cut the lead down to three. The Rough Riders closed the game with a 7-0 run to finally clinch the win.

While Burke dominated the first half scoring for Roosevelt, he was joined by Clarence Williams and William Bryant for second half scoring. In the second half, Bryant scored 11 points, Williams 10, and Burke 9. Each player scored four to six points in the third and fourth quarter. Justin Hammonds, who fouled out with 32 seconds left in the game, and Chris Zurcher each scored 15 for the Jaguars.

With the victory, Roosevelt passed Johnson for sixth place in 26-5A. Johnson, which was once 3-1 in district, including victories over Madison and Churchill, has lost 8 of their last 10 games.

MacArthur applies smothering defense in 47-25 victory over Johnson

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

As they warmed up for their game against the Johnson Lady Jaguars Wednesday night at Littleton Gym, the MacArthur players each wore pinks T-shirts rather the usual Brahma blue.

The Lady Brahmas were dressed in honor of Johnson head coach Audra Bredemeyer, a recently diagnosed breast cancer patient. The shirts were designed by Churchill coach Stacey Moore, on whose staff Bredemeyer coached before she left Churchill to found the Johnson program.

MacArthur head coach Jessica Meador wore a pink shirt as well. Her assistants Chris George and Jamie Grams each added a breast cancer ribbon to the MacArthur logo on their shirts.

In short, MacArthur did everything they could to show their support for Coach Bredemeyer except let her team win.

MacArthur started the game on a 13-0 run on their way to a 47-25 victory.

MacArthur dominated despite their third leading scorer, Nichole Kindred, being shut out for the game and despite their fifth leading scorer, Karisa Cantu, not playing. Marquisha Sparks led all scorers with ten points, while Alexxis Isaac, Lindsey Peterson, and Victoria Willems each added eight. MacArthur duplicated their 13-0 start with a 13-0 run in the second half.

Johnson (9-18, 2-8) is missing leading scorer Julie Knouse, who is on crutches and unavailable for play for at least two weeks. Shorthanded, the Lady Jags were ill equipped to cope with MacArthur’s quickness. Of Johnson’s first 15 possessions, one ended in an air ball, one ended in a blocked shot, and the other 13, including the first nine, all ended in turnovers. Johnson’s first shot to hit the MacArthur rim took place with 2:10 remaining in the first quarter; Johnson’s first basket by Sabriya Gladstone with 1:08 left in the first.

The Lady Brahmas (18-8, 7-4 in 26-5A) are now tied with Reagan for third place in district, and hold a two-game lead over fifth-place Roosevelt and Smithson Valley.

Passing game produces 57-35 MacArthur victory over Johnson

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

MacArthur’s tallest player is Jordan Pratt, listed at 6’4. Johnson has four players who are taller, two of them starters.

The Brahmas countered Johnson’s height with another display of their nifty passing game, overcoming a slow start to take a 57-35 victory Wednesday night at Littleton Gym.

After a competitive first half, MacArthur (21-6, 6-3 in 26-5A) took control in the third quarter with a 12-0 run. Victor Dlugosz contributed seven points and an assist to the surge, which built a 24-22 Brahma lead up to 36-22. The Brahmas also had a 10-0 run late in the fourth.

Such runs looked unlikely in the early going, as Johnson held MacArthur scoreless with first four and a half minutes of the game. The Jaguars (17-11, 4-5 in 26-5A) could only build up a 5-0 lead during that span.

As it would be later in the game, Dlugosz came off the bench to provide a spark. The Brahmas took the lead with an 8-0 run, including four points from Dlugosz, who scored a game-high 16. Justin Hammonds, who led Johnson with 14 points, tied the game with a three-point play; the score was 8-8 after one. Five second quarter points each from Dlugosz and Josh Williams helped MacArthur lead at the half 20-17.

In the second half, MacArthur took over the halfcourt game and began to run the floor as well. For the game, four different Brahmas had at least two assists: Pratt, Dlugosz, Josh Simmons, and Chris Gramling. The Jaguars had little answer for MacArthur’s transition game in the third quarter, and were outscored 17-7.

With the victory, MacArthur overtakes Lee for third place in 26-5A; the Brahmas trail district leaders Madison (7-2) and Churchill (7-2) by one game. Johnson, which could have forced a three-way tie for third with a victory, fall to fifth place, one game behind Lee.

Reagan controls third quarter in 58-28 victory

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

After Johnson’s Julie Knouse got open and sank her fourth three pointer of the first half, Reagan coach Terry Barton pulled aside a player who had rotated away from her.

“Stay on her (Knouse),” he emphasized. “She’s got 12 of their (then 15) points.”

The players listened. Knouse was shut out the rest of the game, and the Reagan Lady Rattlers went on to a 58-28 victory over the Johnson Lady Jaguars Saturday afternoon at Littleton Gym.

Knouse, a senior, played for Barton as a sophomore at Reagan before Johnson (9-16, 2-6 in 26-5A) opened. During the pregame introduction of the starters, each Johnson starter hugged Barton, a reminder that each Johnson player started out going through the Reagan system.

In the third quarter, Reagan (as17-8, 5-3 in 26-5A) didn’t let Knouse score, and barely let anybody else. Kim Piasecki opened the quarter with a basket to pull the Lady Birds within 27-19, then Reagan went on a 18-0 run. Johnson would not score again until Sabriya Gladstone’s basket early in the fourth. Jessica Kuster, once again playing like a woman among girls, scored eight of her 24 points during the run.

Knouse kept her team in the game in the first half, sinking a pair of treys in the first and second quarter both. Kuster, who’ll play for Rice next season, dominated the lane, scored 14 points in the half, including six of six from the free throw line. No other player on either team scored more than four points in the first half.

The victory, combined with MacArthur’s loss to Roosevelt and Smithson Valley’s loss to Churchill later in the day, created a three-way tie for third place in 26-5A among Reagan, MacArthur, and Smithson Valley. Saturday completed the first round of district play in 26-5A.

Johnson coach Audra Bredemeyer led her team, overcoming chemotherapy treatments to do so. Bredemeyer, as reported in the San Antonio Express-News, was diagnosed with breast cancer last October. Bredemeyer wore a scarf over her head to cover her hair loss due to treatments, the only visible sign of her plight.

Reagan dominates third quarter in 75-47 victory

If the Johnson Jaguars didn’t get the number of the bus that hit them in the third quarter of their game against the Reagan Rattlers, it’s understandable.

After all, there were two of them: the #1 (Max Yon), and the #14 (Tre Demps.)

In a runaway third quarter, Max Yon scored 12 points and Tre Demps added 9 in leading Reagan to a 75-47 victory over Johnson Friday evening at Littleton Gym. The victory was the first for interim head coach Norm Galyon, who is running the team while head coach Jimmy Littleton is on administrative leave. Reagan lost their first game under Galyon in New Braunfels Tuesday.

Reagan (15-7, 3-3 in 26-5A) was protecting a 32-28 lead after two quarters when Justin Hammonds’ basket made it 32-30. Then the Rattlers went on a breathtaking 20-0 run, on their way to outscoring the Jaguars 23-5 in the frame. Yon finished with 24 points and Demps with 23; each left the game with about four minutes left.

Johnson (16-10, 3-4 in 26-5A) led 13-10 late in the first quarter. The Jaguars were 8 for 8 from the free throws line in the first quarter, including Justin Hammonds’ sinking all four of his attempts. Yon hit a three to tie the game at 13 at the end of one quarter. Hammonds finished with 23 points, but his teammates only combined for 24 more.

The game, along with MacArthur’s victory over Roosevelt, helped break a four-way tie in the loss column for fourth place in 26-5A. Five teams are now within one game of fourth place in the loss column; MacArthur and Reagan are tied for fourth at 3-3, Johnson is 3-4, and Roosevelt and New Braunfels are 2-4.

JOHNSON SCORING: Justin Hammonds 23, Daryl Threat 6, Anthony Walker 6, Chris Zurcher 4, Lee Rolling 2, Layton Hammonds 2, Pete Molina 2, Walker Cafoe 2, Alain Nataki, Kazden Batey, Scott Wilson, Brandon Bobjak

REAGAN SCORING: Max Yon 24, Tre Demps, Matt Medell 11, James Henderson 5, Carlos Hernandez 3, Connor Knight 2, Callan Brown 2, Brad Coulter 2, Michael Williams 1, Chris Patterson, Bryan Hardy

Rattlers strike back against Jaguars

Reagan stays tied for first; Johnson still can go to playoffs with win

by Mark Kusenberger
Senior Writer, SAsports.com

The Reagan Rattlers had to overcome several big plays by the Johnson Jaguars, but a forceful running attack helped them persevere on their way to a 31-21 victory over the Johnson Jaguars Saturday night at Heroes Stadium.

Reagan (6-2, 5-1 in 26-5A) rushed the ball 59 times, running 73 plays from scrimmage to Johnson’s 41.

Reagan’s offensive line, featuring starters Armani Brumfield-Taylor, Jay Sullivan, Cody Moon, Hunter Nealy, Chad Rocheleau, and tight end Drew Kerstetter, kept Johnson’s front seven on their heels and their backs most of the night. Diego Flores ran the ball 27 times for 145 yards and a touchdown, Travis Knight rushed 21 times for 105 yards and a touchdown, and Taylor Small ran it 11 times for 39 yards.

At one point, Reagan ran 25 consecutive plays from scrimmage, although the run didn’t necessarily start auspiciously. Johnson had a 14-10 lead after a 31-yard touchdown pass from Cohner Mokry to Lee Rolling just before Reagan’s possession streak. Three plays after that score, Reagan tried to run a double-pass play, but the initial overhand lateral from Trevor Knight was muffed by the receiver; Tyler Richard recovered the live ball and ran it in for a 34-yard touchdown, extending Johnson’s lead to 21-10.

Johnson (5-4, 4-3 in 26-5A), however, did have to kick off and give the ball right back to Reagan, after which the Rattlers ran out the half with a 9 play, 61 yard drive. They settled for a 24 yard field goal by Jake Wilcox on the last play of the half, but were then within one possession with the score Johnson 21, Reagan 13.

Reagan took the second half kickoff and reeled off 12 running plays, driving from their own 26 to the Johnson 11. Only then did Reagan throw, and when they did, Knight found Kerstetter for an 11-yard touchdown, then found Jordan Mengele for the two-point conversion, tying the game at 21.

While Johnson managed no first downs in the third quarter, Reagan added a 28 yard field goal from Wilcox and an 11-yard touchdown from Trevor Knight, putting Reagan ahead by the final margin of 31-21.

While Reagan had scoring drives of 9, 12, 9, 13, and 8 plays, Johnson ran only 8 plays in the entire first quarter, and only 6 in the third. The Jaguars led after one quarter thanks to Daniel Warren’s 93-yard touchdown run, which put them ahead 7-3.

Reagan, defending champions of District 26-5A, can repeat as district champions by defeating Madison in Week 10, combined with a win over MacArthur in Week 9 or one Smithson Valley loss. Johnson still has a solid chance to make the playoffs if they defeat New Braunfels in their final regular season game next Saturday.
