Vela leads Edison past Jefferson

Sophomore scores 24 in 53-50 victory

Arty Vela scored 24 points as the Edison Golden Bears pulled into a tie for fourth in district with a nail-biting 53-50 victory over their arch rival Jefferson Mustangs Saturday afternoon at the Alamo Convocation Center.

Vela’s effort helped overcome a terrific performance from Jefferson’s Durron Gadson, who finished with 19 himself.

Gadson almost literally single-handedly kept his team in the game in the first quarter. The Mustangs employed a 2-3 zone to neutralize Edison’s front court, but Gadson supplied all nine of the Mustangs’ first quarter points. Thanks in part to Vela and Leroy Olivares each shooting a three over the Jefferson zone, the Golden Bears led 13-9 after one quarter.

Gadson’s basket late in the first started an 8-2 with tied the game at 15. Edison responded with a 9-0 run to build their biggest lead at 24-15, but Gadson again kept his team in the game. Gadson drew a foul with 19.6 seconds left in the half, and made both free throws. When Jefferson (5-19, 0-7 in 28-4A) got the ball back and the Edison defense collapsed on him, Gadson found Sam Barron, who hit a three with 1 second left in the half; the Jefferson deficit was down to 24-20.

The 4-0 run extended to 12-1 during the third. After an Edison free throw, treys by Christian Vasquez and Barron put Jefferson in the lead, and a basket by Steve Gutierrez extended that lead to 28-25. A later three by Vela put Edison back in the lead at 32-30, but a three-point play by Gadson gave Jefferson the lead again 33-32.

Vela sank another two to put Edison in front for good at 34-33, but the Golden Bears would never build the lead higher than seven during the fourth quarter. Vasquez scored seven in the fourth, including a deuce with 38.14 seconds left to bring Jefferson within 52-50. Leroy Olivares made one of two free throws with 14.5 seconds left to force Jefferson to shoot a three; Gadson’s attempt with one second remaining missed.

Edison (6-18, 3-4 in 28-4A) is tied with Burbank and Kennedy for fourth place in district. Saturday’s game completed the first round of district play.

Jefferson was without head coach Paul Ramirez, who missed the game to attend a funeral.

Bears devour Mustangs in 64-25 victory

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

Don’t blame Edison coach Angie Alonzo if she was nervous before her team’s game against Jefferson Saturday afternoon.

After all, her team had Parents Afternoon scheduled, and the players would be involved in the ceremonies on the court at halftime rather than in the locker room for instructions and adjustments.

It turned out that Edison led 36-6 at the half, so Coach Alonzo could simply tell her team “keep doing what you’re doing.”

Edison finished with a 64-25 victory over the Jefferson Mustangs at the Alamo Convocation Center. The victory gives Edison a sweep of Jefferson, the Lady Golden Bears having won 53-47 in the first round of district on December 18th.

Edison (12-14, 8-1 in 28-4A) led 16-1 after the first quarter, converting two steals into breakaways layups and frustrating Jefferson with their man-to-man defense. Ashley Ortiz contributed seven of Edison’s points.

Jefferson (7-18, 3-6 in 28-4A) struggled just as much in the second quarter, being outscored 20-5. Cindy Loredo led the Bears with 9 second quarter points and 11 for the half.

Edison dominated the first half from every angle imaginable. Take away Edison’s top three scorers – Loredo with 11, Vivian Cervantes with 10, and Ashley Ortiz with 9 – and Edison still would have been tied with Jefferson at 6. In the first half, the Lady Mustangs had six points and five fouls.

During the break between the third and fourth quarters, with the score 50-14, the public address at Alamo Gym played “Macarena” by Los del Rio. One of the Edison players was clearly on the verge of breaking out with the dance when Coach Alonzo playfully waved her back into the huddle.

Even the scariest moment of the afternoon had a humorous ending. Edison guard Abbey De Leon fell face down to the floor after taking a charge with 4:01 remaining in the third quarter. De Leon lay motionless for two long minutes before suddenly, she did two pushups and returned, with assistance, to the bench, to the delight and relief of the crowd. De Leon returned to the ballgame with 2:37 remaining in the game.

With the win, Edison remains tied for first place in 28-4A with Lanier and Burbank. With five district games remaining, Edison will clinch a playoff berth with one win or a Brackenridge loss. Jefferson could have pulled into a tie for fourth with Kennedy with an upset; they instead fall into a tie for fifth with Brackenridge, one game behind Kennedy.

Bulldogs outscore Jefferson 30-13 in last half of victory

by Mark Kusenberger

Burbank’s defense shut down one Jefferson scorer, then another, allowing them to come from behind for a 47-38 victory over the Jefferson Mustangs Monday night at the Alamo Convocation Center.

Randall Webb led all scorers with 12, including six in the decisive fourth quarter. Jason Ainsworth added nine, including a three-pointer early in the fourth which gave Burbank their first lead at 32-29.

Jefferson (5-16, 0-4 in 28-4A) rode Sam Barron’s hot hand to a 16-12 lead. Barron scored the Mustangs’ first 11 points, including three three-pointers; two of the three-pointers came on assists from Barron’s brother Jon. However, Burbank adjusted their defense, and Sam Barron was held scoreless the rest of the game.

After Sam Barron cooled off, Steven Martinez took over. Martinez scored Jefferson’s last five points of the first half, and added three more in the second. Cesar Garza and Christian Vasquez added three-pointers, helping Jefferson build their lead to 25-17 at the half.

Then Burbank shut down Martinez, too. Martinez scored only two points in the second half, on a driving layup with 3 minutes left.

Nic Dutcher extended Jefferson’s lead to 27-17 early in the third, but Burbank took over from there. A 10-0 run spearheaded by Ralph Chavez allowed Burbank to tie the game; Chavez contributed a three-pointer, a two-pointer, an assist and a steal during the run.

Although Jefferson retook the lead on Durron Gadson’s first points of the night, Burbank went back to work with an 11-2 run to take the lead for good. After building a 38-31 lead, the Bulldogs began killing the clock. The last half of the fourth quarter included two Burbank possessions where they passed the ball eight times before shooting.

Burbank (11-12, 2-2) pulled into a three-way tie for third with Kennedy and Lanier in 28-4A. Jefferson, after Edison’s win early in the evening, is now the only winless team in 28-4A play.

Burbank dominates second half in 54-33 victory

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

Burbank coach Laura Zapata may not care to remember her halftime speech to her team.

After leading 20-17 at intermission, Burbank saw Jefferson start the quarter on a 7-0 run, including to driving layups from Lady Mustangs guard Brittany Garza, putting Jefferson ahead 24-20.

Zapata called a 30-second timeout with 6:25 left in the third to stem the tide. Whatever she said, Burbank came out of the timeout and went on a 31-0 run on their way to a 54-33 victory over Jefferson Monday evening at the Alamo Convocation Center.

The win kept Burbank (13-11, 5-1 in 28-4A) within one game of first place Edison, and put them in a tie with Lanier for second. Burbank faces Edison on Friday, with a chance to pull into a tie for first with a win.

Sam Webb scored 12 of her 21 points during the dominant second half run; Jennifer Gonzales and Kim Garcia each added six. Between Michelle Salinas’ three-pointer and Garza’s basket with 2:26 remaining in the game, the Lady Mustangs were held scoreless for 12 minute stretch.

Jefferson (5-17, 1-5 in 28-4A) stayed competitive throughout the first half, depending on three players to provide the scoring. Nyssa Sanchez scored 7, and Salinas and Christina Gonzales each scored five. Jefferson could well have been leading; they made only 2 of 10 free throws in the first half, compared to 3 of 5 for Burbank.

Edison holds off Jefferson rally for 53-48 victory

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

Vivian Cervantes and Adrienne Alvarado each scored 13 points in leading the Edison Lady Golden Bears to a 53-48 victory over the Jefferson Lady Mustangs Friday night at the Alamo Convocation Center.

Edison (5-11, 2-0 in 28-4A) remained tied for first place with Burbank and Lanier after the victory. Edison’s record includes 6 losses to 5A schools and one victory over a 5A school, 46-43 over Midland Lee on November 11th.

Scoring was spread out in the first half. Seven players for each team scored, and no player scored more than five points (Cervantes and Alyssa Aguilar for Edison, Michelle Salinas for Jefferson.) Jefferson never led during the game, but the Lady Mustangs’ 8-3 run to close the second quarter put Jefferson within 25-20 at halftime.

In contrast, only five players total scored points in the third quarter. For Edison, Alvarado scored 7, de Leon 6, and Cindy Loredo 4; for Jefferson, Nyssa Sanchez contributed 6 and Brittany Garza scored 5. Garza’s three-pointer to open the third brought the Lady Mustangs within 25-23, and when Alvarado scored to build the lead up again, Garza responded with a driving layup to again make it a two-point margin at 27-25. However, after Edison coach Angie Alonzo called a timeout with 5:43 left in the third, the Lady Bears went on a 13-2 run, building the lead to 40-27. Edison led 42-31 after three.

But Edison had to know nothing would come easy against their arch rivals. Even after a layup by Michale Kelly and free throws by Cervantes built the Edison lead back to 12 at 53-41, Jefferson closed the game on a 7-0 run to make it interesting late. Christina Gonzalez scored a two-pointer, Emily Ramirez hit a three, and Nyssa Sanchez added two free throws to produce the points.

Sanchez led all scorers with 15 points, including 9 of 15 shooting from the free throw line. Sanchez made 2 of 4 free throws during Jefferson’s late 7-0 run.

With the loss, Jefferson (4-11, 1-1 in 28-4A) falls into a tie for fourth place with Kennedy, who defeated Memorial Friday night.

Jefferson virtually clinches playoff berth with 47-0 victory

by Mark Kusenberger
Senior Writer, SAsports.com

The Jefferson Mustangs scored touchdowns on their first five possessions and limited Fox Tech to 136 yards total offense in a 47-0 victory Thursday night at Alamo Stadium.

Each team entered the game tied for second place in 28-4A with Edison and Lanier. The decisive victory, combined with Jefferson’s 42-28 win over Kennedy earlier this season, gives Jefferson an advantage in most tiebreakers and makes them a near lock for the playoffs, even should they lose to Edison in their final game next Friday.

Jefferson (5-4, 4-2 in 28-4A) ran 47 plays from scrimmage for 442 yards total offense before going into victory formation for the final three plays of the game. Samuel Barron had a hand in all 7 touchdowns, completing 14 of 19 passes for 245 yards and 5 touchdowns, and running the ball 10 times for 67 yards and 2 more touchdowns. Patrick Farias, perhaps motivated by hearing his name mispronounced by the public address announcer the entire night, rushed the ball 10 times himself for 96 yards. Alexio Alvarado caught 4 passes for 96 yards and 2 touchdowns; Barron completed passes for 8 different receivers.

Jefferson took the opening kickoff and drove 74 yards in 7 plays. Barron completed his only pass attempt of the drive for 24 yards to backup quarterback Travis Rochester the play before he ran the ball in from 14 yards out. A bad snap spoiled the extra point attempt, but Jefferson led 6-0. Three plays later, Mark DeWitt intercepted a Mark Morales pass and returned it to the Fox Tech 29. After losing yardage on a pair of running attempts, Barron found Alvarado for a 32-yard touchdown pass; Diego Lula’s kick extended Jefferson’s lead to 13-0 just fix minutes into the game.

Barron’s second rushing touchdown put the Mustangs ahead 20-0 before Fox Tech’s best drive of the night. The Buffaloes roamed 13 plays for 6:44, converting a third-down and a fourth-down to keep the drive alive, but were thwarted at the Jefferson 17 when Morales threw incomplete. Ten plays later, Barron found Alvarado against, this time for a 34 yard touchdown, and the outcome was set.

Fox Tech (3-6, 3-3 in 28-4A) managed only 6 first downs.

The Mustang victory practically cements Jefferson’s playoff ambitions. Only in the following scenario COULD Jefferson miss the postseason: 1) Lanier beats Brackenridge, 2) Lanier loses the Chili Bowl to Fox Tech, 3) Edison loses to Memorial, and 4) Edison defeats Jefferson by 8 or more points; even then other developments could send Jefferson to the playoffs. Fox Tech can still advance to the playoffs with a Chili Bowl victory as long as Lanier beats Brackenridge OR Jefferson defeats Edison; even if neither of those games works out the Buffaloes’ way, other scenarios could send Fox Tech to the playoffs should they defeat Lanier.

How would SAISD proposals affect athletics?

Posted by Jay Tope on July 29, 2009 at 6:34 am

The San Antonio Independent School District released three different proposals which call for new attendance boundary lines, and consolidating, repurposing, and modernizing schools over the next several years.

Here’s how each SAISD high school would be affected under the proposals:

Proposal 1
Brackenridge becomes a middle school; HS students combine with Sam Houston students to form a new 2300 student high school, at the 5A level

Burbank becomes a middle school

Edison grows to become a 2500 student high school, at the 5A level

Fox Tech becomes a non-boundary magnet high school with 800 students

Highlands grows to become a 2600 student high school, still at the 5A level

Jefferson grows to become a 2500 student high school, at the 5A level

Lanier grows to become a 2600 student high school, at the 5A level

Sam Houston students combine with Brackenridge students to form a new high school.

Proposal 2
Brackenridge becomes a middle school; students move to Wheatley MS which becomes a HS; combines with Sam Houston students to form a 5A school

Burbank becomes a non-boundary special purpose high school, population TBD

Edison grows to become a 2200 student high school, at the 5A level

Fox Tech becomes a non-boundary magnet high school with 800 students

Highlands grows to become a 2600 student high school, still at the 5A level

Jefferson grows to become a 2500 student high school, at the 5A level

Lanier grows to become a 2600 student high school, at the 5A level

Sam Houston students move to Wheatley MS, which becomes a HS; combines with Brackenridge students to form a 5A high school

Proposal 3
Brackenridge remains a high school, at the 4A level.

Burbank remains a high school, grows to over 2100 students, at the 5A level

Edison grows to become a 1900+ student high school, possibly remaining at 4A level.

Fox Tech becomes a non-boundary magnet high school with 800 students

Highlands grows to become a 2400+ student high school, still at the 5A level

Jefferson continues to be a 4A high school, with 1500 students

Lanier grows to become a 2400 student high school, at the 5A level

Sam Houston high school closes
