Highlands, MacArthur combined for four hits in 1-1 game

MacArthur’s Mario Siller twirled a three-hitter, and Highlands’ Joel Camacho and Rory Rivera combined to one-hit MacArthur as the teams played to a 1-1 tie Thursday afternoon in North East Tournament action at Paul Lindy Field.

Siller and Camacho each had no-hitters through four innings. Siller’s was broken up when Travis Bailey stroked a one-out single to right in the top of the fifth. Bailey went to second on a wild pitch, to third on a basehit up the middle by Jeff Cavazos, and scored on another wild pitch. Cavazos was stranded at second after Jonathan Valentine flied out to right and Joel Camacho struck out to end the inning.

MacArthur (2-3-2, 1-0 in 26-5A) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. After third baseman Valentine made a terrific play on an Andrew Huerta grounder for the first out, Siller waked, then went to second when Cecil hit a clean single to right for MacArthur’s only hit of the game. Tommy Moore walked to load the bases, then Highlands coach Mike Perez brought in Rory Rivera to pitch, sending Camacho to center field and removing Sammy Gonzales from the game. Rivera gave up a sacrifice fly to center by Patrick Ward which tied the game, then retired Ryan Belanga on a grounder to second to end the threat.

The last baserunner for Highlands (3-4-1) was Chris Pacheco, who led off the sixth with a single to left. Siller struck out Jonathan Armijo, then got Greg Contreras to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the frame.

MacArthur also failed to score the rest of the game, but one failed threat constituted progress. In the third and fourth inning, MacArthur got the leadoff man aboard – for one whole pitch. Each time, the next man up attempted to sacrifice but bunted and missed, allowing catcher Contreras to pick off each runner at first. In the sixth, Gage Creswell was hit by a 2-0 pitch to lead it off. Tyler Schnuriger successfully sacrificed his courtesy runner Shane Potts to second. Ironically, Potts was stranded there.

The unusual setting may have had something to do with the poor hitting. Instead of a standard wooden, solid outfield fence with a hitter’s backdrop, Lindy Field’s outfield is chain link, with MacArthur High School’s main building as a backdrop.

For tournament scheduling purposes, MacArthur was treated as the winner. Each team advanced two runners to third; MacArhur came out ahead by advancing 8 runners to second to Highlands’ three.

Highlands girls close season with a loss

Jackson, Flores lead Carroll to 64-47 victory over Lady Owls

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

The Highlands Lady Owls finished their season in seventh place after a 64-47 loss to the Corpus Christi Carroll Lady Tigers Tuesday evening at the Alamo Convocation Center.

The Lady Owls (14-19, 3-11 in 27-5A), playing their last game of the season, could have created a three-way tie for fifth in the district amongst themselves, Carroll, and East Central with a victory. Instead, Carroll finishes fifth, East Central sixth, and Highlands seventh.

Highlands started four juniors and a sophomore against Carroll. The sophomore, Jourdan Doffeny, proved to be their leading scorer, finishing with 19 points, 13 in the second half; Doffeny made 5 of 9 free throw attempts. Junior Shanesha Clayton added 16 points, shooting 6 of 10 from the free throw line and sinking a pair of three-pointers. Highlands’ two seniors who played, Shakyia May and Sarah Delarosa, combined for two points.

When Highlands could establish a full-court tempo, they kept pace with Carroll (8-17, 5-9 in 27-5A). However, when the game went to a halfcourt style, Highlands could not control the Lady Tigers’ inside-outside game. Marion Flores scored 12 points in the first quarter alone on four three-pointers, finishing the first half with 15 and the game with 18 after a fourth-quarter trey. Once Flores’ shot was established, Highlands’ attempts to keep the perimeter defended left Melanie Jackson open under the hoop. Time and again, Jackson would find herself over six feet away from defenders, accept a pass and make an easy layup. Jackson finished with a game-high 29, scoring almost all her points within five feet of the bucket.

Highlands led 11-7 halfway through the first quarter before Carroll went on a 15-3 run to close the quarter. Flores and Jackson each contributed three field goals to the run: three-pointers for Flores, two-pointers for Jackson. By the time Carroll led 49-26 late in the third, they were giving minutes to players at the end of the bench. Mari Mireles, Nadia Diaz, and Amanda Garcia, who combined for less than 50 points during the regular season according to MySA.com, each scored in the second half, to the cheers of their teammates.

Varsity Football

As the sun set on the night of October 30th, the Mighty Highlands Owls were getting ready for one of the best match-ups yet. The Owls were facing the South San Bobcats at South San and were very much ready. As the fans piled into the stadium, the game was on between the two. The Owls showed their pride the whole game, not giving up as Tyrice Hill led all receivers with 64 yards. James Hastings led all running backs with several strong runs. Joe Jimenez along with Samudio Senior had a terrific night on defense. At the game’s end, the Owls fell to the Bobcats 20-0. The Owls celebrated their Homecoming this past Friday at Alamo Stadium against Wagner, but fell to the Thunderbirds.

Basketball

The time has come for Highlands to show their skill on the basketball court. The Lady
Owls started off their season with scrimmages against Burbank, Laredo United, and Sam Houston; they did extremely well in all three. The boys basketball team is set to scrimmage this later this week.

Golf

The Highlands Owls Boys Golf team participated in a tournament placing 4th overall. The team had an overall score of 538 in 27 holes. Team participants include Jacob Martinez with a score of 119 placing 3rd as an individual medalist, Steven Martinez with a 123, Nick Malacara with a 142, and Kevin Cepeda with 154.

The Lady Owls Golf team participated in the Warren Girls Invitational this past weekend at Alsatian Golf Course in Castroville. The team had an overall score of 533 with participants Kiana Garcia (149), Alexis Gonzalez (139), Veronica Gonzalez (144), Stefani Rodriguez (123), and Nicole Rubio (127). Cross Country

As the Owls Cross Country season came to their final meet for District held in Corpus Christi they were more than ready. The Girls team placed 3rd overall and had sophomore Jordan Doffney qualify for Regionals with an outstanding 7th place finish and a personal best time for the second year in a row. As for the Boys team, they had Roland Arambula place 10th to also qualify for Regionals.

Congratulations to both the Owls and Lady Owls for their extreme hard work and excellent finish on the season.

Varsity Football

Saturday night the 24th as the Owls took on the C.C. Carroll Tigers at Alamo Stadium, they never gave up. The Owls came out strong as always, scoring a touchdown in the 1st quarter by Tyrice Hill, who led all receivers with 148 yards. Samudio Senior led all rushers with a great effort. On defense, Greg Contreras and Robert Reyna had a terrific night holding their ground along with the rest of the Owls who played with their hearts. At the finish the Owls could not hang on, falling to the Tigers 48-7. Highlands faces the South San Bobcats at South San Friday October 30th.

As the night began with the kickoff of the ball, the battle was on between the East Central Hornets and Highlands Owls. The opening of District 27-5A play at Alamo Stadium on Thursday September 24 brought many spectators to support the televised event.

The Hornets stung quickly to a 6-0 lead. Highlands then marched their way down the field, but fell short of the end zone. The Owls went on to make many great plays, including an interception by Joel Duarte (#5). Playmaker Tyrice Hill (#9) had several completions that contributed to a hard-fought game with an all-out effort by the Owls. The running game was complimented by James Hastings (#23).

As the game came to an end the Owls fell short of a win, but gave it all in their performance. The Owls go on to face C.C. King at Cabiniss Field this Friday at 7:30 for another chance to display their hard work.

On a night when no fewer than three 27-5A contests were being played, East Central took control of Highlands early on.

And when the dust had settled (or in this case, the rubber pellets on the synthetic turf), it was the Hornets with a big 52-0 win over the Highlands Owls on the opening night of district play at Alamo Stadium.
