Southwest defeats Eagle Pass to keep share of first place
by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer
Trevion Johnson had 30 carries in Southwest’s victory over the Steele Knights in non-district play.
Johnson had 7 carries against Laredo Martin last week, then sat down because Southwest (4-0, 2-0 in 29-5A) had the game won handily.
A fast-maturing Eagle Pass team figured to a squad that could force Johnson to match his career high for carries, but Southwest scored touchdowns on 5 of their first 6 possessions on their way to a 35-9 victory Friday night at Dragons Stadium.
Johnson shouldered much of the workload, finishing with 18 carries for 134 yards and a touchdown.
Eagle Pass (3-1, 1-1 in 29-5A) was playing without multiple threat Eric Valdez, who returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the Eagles’ victory over Medina Valley.
In the second quarter, Eagle Pass drew within 14-3 after an 11 play drive produced a 27-yard field goal by Alex Carrillo. On Southwest’s first play from scrimmage after the score, Rolando Salinas interception a pass – only the second pass thrown by Southwest that night, and returned it to the Southwest 42. The Eagles drove to the Southwest 1 for a second-and-goal, but a run for no yards by quarterback Tommy Galvan, a loss of one on a run by running back Randy Garza, and an incomplete pass gave Southwest a goal line stop with 3:15 left in the second quarter.
Three runs by Johnson got Southwest to their 23. Five plays later, Southwest used a five-wide receiver formation, then sent quarterback Felix Castillo on a run. He danced 72 yards for a touchdown, building the Dragons’ lead to 21-3 with 1:16 left in the half.
Next, Southwest forced Eagle Pass into a three-and-out and used their final two timeouts to get the ball back with 40 seconds left. Of the eight passes Southwest threw during the game, four were during this drive. Castillo completed the second pass to starting quarterback Steven Lacivita for 20 yards, then after a spike to stop the block and a procedure penalty, Castillo found Aaron Kelley for a 15-yard score. Southwest scored two touchdowns in the last minute of the first half to build a 28-3 lead.
The Southwest defense limited Randy Garza, who had 377 yards rushing in his previous two games, to 52 yards on 15 carries.
Eagle Pass travels to Laredo next week to play United. Southwest’s next game is at home against Laredo Alexander. The Dragons, who haven’t lost a district game in three years, travel to Laredo United in two weeks and to Del Rio to face the greatest remaining threats to their 29-5A title hopes.

Eagle Pass went 5-1 at the Jaguar Classic in Floresville, defeating Highlands to start things off on Saturday 25-18, 17-25, 25-19.

Although Highlands would also fall to George West, the Owls volleyball program has vastly improved over the past several years.

The Friday night lights switched on for the final time last weekend as our Eagles suited up to take on United South. Though last weeks loss to Alexander was a heart-wrenching one our boys pulled through to put on an excellent final performance, beating the United South Panthers 50 to 16. The Mighty Eagles also defeated Laredo Martin a couple weeks earlier.
As for our volleyball team, not enough words can be said to express how proud our school is of what they have accomplished this season. They were district champs and advanced all the way to round three in playoffs. They conquered Sharyland in the bi-district match, took down Edinburg South in area, but missed victory by just 3 points in the regional qualifier. Congratulations go out to the girls and all their hard work this season.
Fall is here and basketball at Eagle Pass High School is up and going. Updates and stats will be coming soon!

With just two more games left in their regular season, our Lady Eagle volleyball team is preparing to take on playoffs. They took down Martin last Saturday in three sets and the pressure is now on to defeat Alexander for the second time this coming weekend. A win will ensure the Lady Eagles the district championship, but a loss will force a tie between the two. It should be an exciting game so all Eagle fans be sure to be at the gym this Saturday at 2:00p.m.
This week I took time out to talk to the girls and ask them a few questions:
What are your team strengths?
“The reason our team is so strong is due to our block, ability to terminate the ball, and great team chemistry. We all work together really well on the court.” –Monica Martinez [senior]
What do you have to say about your only loss to United?
“I believe we went in there expecting to win, and didn’t completely focus on the game at hand. Our goal was to stay undefeated, and that was a pressure weighing heavily on all of us. We took the loss as a learning experience, humbled ourselves, and are now ready to fight even harder in all the games to come.” –Nina Schuessler [senior]
What are your expectations going into playoffs?
“This is the year that our talent level is enough to take us the furthest in playoffs. We’ve accomplished so much throughout the season and feel prepared to face tougher competition.” –Alexis Gonzalez [senior]
As far as football goes, our boys have gone head to head against the toughest teams in the district. Last Friday against Del Rio victory was in reach until a fatal mistake on an onside kick turned the game over. The Eagles once again put up a valiant fight, but didn’t come out on top at the end of the game. The Eagles three touchdowns were scored by Randy Garza, Tommy Galvan, and Wesley Hammack. Isiah Mezquiti, who led the team in tackles along with Roldolfo Sierra, believes their football season could be a whole lot better. “This year our team is extremely talented, we’ve just had a couple of misfortunate losses. As far as the next few games I’m confident we will pick up wins. The seniors, especially, are determined to make playoffs so I’m more then sure we will come out on top these last few games.”
Good luck guys! The next game is scheduled for this Saturday at 7:30p.m. against Laredo Martin.

It comes as no surprise that our Lady Eagle volleyball team continues to dominate the competition this season. With an excellent coaching staff and a group of extremely talented athletes, the girls swept through the first round of district play flawlessly. Last Saturday they took down the CC Winn Mavericks once again in just three sets, however, faced a bit of a challenge this past Tuesday against Southwest. Fans were at the edge of their seats as our Lady Eagles battled it out all five sets with the Lady Dragons. They successfully won the first two sets but struggled throughout the following. Their great athleticism and determination, though, proved to outweigh that of their opponent and the girls claimed yet another victory. The only set back came with the loss to the United Longhorns on Saturday. The girls fought hard, but fell short in the fifth set. The next game is scheduled for tomorrow against Laredo Martin. Good luck ladies and congratulations on your success!
Though our football team is still recovering from two tough consecutive losses, a light of hope is still glimmering for a playoff position. At the start of district play our Eagles faced some stiff competition, going head to head against Southwest and last years district champs Laredo United. The boys are now working hard to make the necessary adjustments to prove they are indeed a force to be reckoned with. The focus now is on the game this Friday against the Del Rio Rams, yet another tough opponent. *We believe in you Eagles* Go out and show them what you’ve got! Fans-make plans to attend the game this weekend to support your Mighty Eagles.

The mighty Eagles soared into district action this past Friday in what was to be the most anticipated game of the season. Battling our cross-town rivals, the CC Winn Mavericks, the Eagles fought hard to pull out a 31-30 victory. This will be the third consecutive year our team has defeated the Mavs since our high schools split in 2005. The Eagles suit up again this Friday at home to play San Antonio Southwest at 7:00 pm- Everyone go out and support your Eagles! (:
When it comes to hitting like a girl, our volleyball team proves it is indeed a compliment. The Lady Eagles are going strong, continuing to be undefeated in district play. They faced Alexander, their toughest competition of the season, last weekend and pulled out a triumphant win in just three sets. They went on to beat United South this past Tuesday, and will kick off their second round of play this Saturday against the CC Winn Mavericks.
Now to mention the kids that “run this town,” our fantastic cross country team has had a great season so far. They will be traveling to Carrizo Springs on Saturday for their next meet. Good luck guys!
Reminder: Pep rally this Friday at 8 am in the gym
All seniors who registered for the October 4th SAT test, don’t forget to show up Saturday morning at 7:45 at CC Winn.
