Caleb Gentry, Ben Keilman dominate in 78-45 victory

Note to 3A teams in Region IV – never leave Ben Keilman open near the hoop.

Tuesday night against Devine, Keilman scored 20 points on ten field goals – two on putbacks, six on assists from teammates, including four from Jason Gentry.

And when Keilman was covered, or on the bench in foul trouble, Caleb Gentry slashed through whatever space was left on the court for 24 points in leading Hondo to a 78-45 victory at Hondo High School.

While Matt Lopez at 6’0 was the tallest starter for Devine, Hondo started not only the 6’4 Keilman, but also six-footers Jonah Ytuarte and Caleb Gentry. The Owls built on their lead throughout the game; although they had no long, dominating runs, they only let Devine score more than four straight points only once.

All of Keilman’s points came from within six feet of the basket. Caleb Gentry consistently went from the perimeter to the basket for points. Gentry shot 8 of 11 from the free throw line; his acrobatics including a drive to the hoop early in the second quarter where he swung the ball around his waist before making a layup, and a borderline dunk for a fourth quarter score.

The biggest ovation of the game, however, went to Hondo’s Lee Ray Quintanilla. Quintanilla, a senior, was the last of Hondo’s twelve players to participate in the ballgame; he scored off an assist from Leonard Rodriguez in the final two minutes of the game.

Devine was led in scoring by Michael Carson, who scored 13 points on 7 of 10 free throw shooting, and Matt Lopez, who showed some fine post-up moves in scoring 13 points before fouling out.

Hondo (21-2, 2-0 in 29-3A), ranked #24 in the state, is tied with Crystal City for first place in district. Devine (7-9, 1-1) falls into a tie with Lytle for third after the loss.

State-ranked Hondo uses quickness in 62-46 victory

by Mark Kusenberger

The Hondo Lady Owls, #25 in the state, flew out to a 10-1 run to start the game on their way to a 62-46 victory Tuesday night at Hondo High School.

Hondo’s Katie Arcos scored eight first quarter points on her way to a game-high 19. Luanna Lopez contributed nine first half points and several assists.

Devine had a slight height advantage over Hondo, but could not cope with Hondo’s quickness in either the half court game or the full court game. Hondo outscored Devine in each quarter of the ballgame. Along with the 10-1 run to start the game, Hondo enjoyed a 9-0 run in the second quarter and an 11-0 run in the fourth. After the 9-0 run in the second, Devine was no closer than 11 points the rest of the game.

Hondo only outscored Devine 29-24 in the second half. The difference proved to be that while Devine had two players scored seven or more second half points (Katherine Harrell with nine, Shaelyn Stacy with 8), Hondo had three (Katie Arcos and Chesney Brown with nine apiece, Colleen Moss with seven.)

The Lady Owls (23-5, 4-0 in 29-3A) maintain a share of first place in 29-3A with the victory. Friday, Hondo will go to Lytle, currently #10 in the state, in a faceoff for the district lead.

Devine (14-10, 2-2 in 29-3A) is now third place in district with the first round of district one game away from being complete. The Arabians will face Crystal City Friday, and can stay alone in third place in district with a victory.

When you get Lytle and Devine together in a contest, it’s going to be a wild night.

When it’s for the District 29-3A volleyball championship, it’s even crazier. And so it was, as the Lytle volleyball team finished with an unblemished mark in district play after defeating the Devine Arabians on Tuesday.

Things just got a bit more interesting in the District 29-3A playoff race.

That’s because the Devine Warhorses upset the district-leading Hondo Owls 28-26 on Friday night, scrambling the playoff positioning race and making next week’s Hondo-Bandera matchup larger than life.

UIL shakes up 3A districts… again

Posted by Jay Tope on March 24, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Come this fall, the 3A districts in South Texas will be shaken up considerably.

The new changes, which were released last week, are as follows for basketball, cross-country, volleyball, softball, and baseball:

District 8-3A - Burnet, Llano and Liberty Hill stay in this district, and are joined by Austin Vandegrift and Leander Rouse.

District 29-3A - This district now has Carrizo Springs, Crystal City, Devine, Hondo, Lytle, and Pearsall. Bandera will move to 30-3A, which was an open district, Boerne High School (not to be confused with Boerne Champion), will NOT be in 29-3A as was originally planned.

District 30-3A - This previously open district will have Bandera, Boerne, Canyon Lake, Fredericksburg, Ingram Tom Moore, and Wimberley.

In football, 8-3A will be the same as it was in 2008-2008, with the addition of Leander Rouse. Boerne and Austin Vandegrift will play independent football schedules. 29-3A will be the same as 2008-2009; and 30-3A will be open.

Good luck to everyone on today’s TAKS test!

Everyone here at SAsports.com wishes the best for the freshman, sophomores, and juniors who are taking the TAKS test today. Think positively, eliminate distractions, and success will follow.

God bless you guys!
