Merino triple leads Brandeis over Uvalde 12-3

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

Faith Merino’s three-run triple gave Brandeis a lead they would not yield, as the Broncos defeated the Uvalde Lobos 12-3 in six innings Saturday afternoon at Northside Field #1.

After Uvalde had taken a 3-2 lead, Brandeis loaded the bases against losing pitcher Lyndi Smith (0-3). With one away, Emily Smith doubled, followed by a Taylor Johnson single and a walk to Anna Parnin. One out later, Merino tripled to score all three, and Brandeis had the lead for good.

Before the game was finished, all nine Lady Broncos in the batting order had at least one hit, and eight had scored at least one run.

Winning pitcher Lauren Torres (2-0) pitched out of a bases-loaded, one out jam in the top of the first. After a one-out double by Uvalde’s Macy Ybarra, and walks to Lyndi Smith and Avery McHugh, Sierra Jimenez grounded to third baseman Emily Smith, who threw home to catcher Taylor Johnson for the force; Johnson then threw to first baseman Merino to retire Jimenez for a 5-2-3 double play, ending the inning.

Brandeis (3-1-1) scored two in the first on an RBI single by Victoria Silva and a run-scoring error. Uvalde (0-5) took the lead with a three-run third, beginning with a leadoff single by Monica Perez. Two strikeouts later, Lyndi Smith and Avery McHugh walked to load the bases, then Jimenez singled to drive in Perez and Smith; McHugh scored on an error to put Uvalde in front.

Merino’s triple in the bottom of the third put Brandeis in front 5-3; Merino scored on a basehit by Angelica Sifuentes to extend the lead to 6-3.

Silva came to the pitching circle to relief Torres in the top of the fourth and pitched three shutout innings for the save. Silva gave up one hit, walked none, hit one batter and struck out three.

Brandeis closed out the scoring with a six-run sixth inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. Five of the first seven batters got hits, and a tiring Lyndi Smith threw four wild pitches.

During the bottom of the sixth, the game reached the Northside Tournament time limit, canceling the seventh inning.

Taft makes it ’senior’ night

Raiders close regular season with 67-52 victory over Brandeis

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

Taft coach Joey Tate gave his seniors a graduation present Wednesday night – a start in the Raiders’ final regular season game against Brandeis.

The four seniors - Eddy Serra, Nick Koszuta, Darian Black, and Tremayne Elias – combine to average 8.4 points a game, but given the opportunity, they built an 8-4 lead before Tate returned to his regular rotation. Although Brandeis would take the lead against Taft’s regular starters, the Raiders went on to a 67-52 victory Wednesday evening at the Paul Taylor Field House.

Marshall Harris, the lone regular to start with the seniors, scored three points as did Tremayne Elias during Taft’s 8-4 start. Tate sent in the rest of his regular starters to join Harris with 3:29 left in the first quarter, but initially they looked uncomfortable. After a Harris basket made it 10-4 Taft, Brandeis went on a 7-0 run to briefly take the lead. The Broncos took the lead on free throws by Justin Graham.

Then the Taft press took over. Harris got a steal and fed the ball to Dylan Elias for a layup, giving Taft the lead. Carlos Abdullah Gutierrez then stole the ensuing inbound and converted for an easy score, sending Taft into the second quarter with a 14-11 lead.

After Brandeis climbed within 17-15, Taft went on a 12-0 run, including five points by Dylan Elias and four from Gutierrez. The Taft lead never went under 11 points the rest of the game.

Taft (27-7, 13-3 in 28-5A) clinched the second seed in district with the victory. District 27-5A featured a three-way tie for second, amongst East Central, Judson, and Victoria Memorial, each of whom split with the other two, so Taft’s first round playoff opponent is unknown until the third seed in 27-5A is determined.

Brandeis, led by 13 points from Sterling Smoak and 12 from Curtis Powell, finished ninth in 28-5A at 2-14. Next year, the Broncos will return all their players, including Smoak and Powell, except two.

Coach Tate had other moments of fun during the game. In the first quarter, a Brandeis pass went out of bounds and bounced off the clipboard he was holding. Although he didn’t catch the ball, he did say “I was open!”

Coach Tate had more fun with 3:13 left in the game, after Harris’s free throws pushed the Taft lead to 64-43.

Comfortable the game was in hand, Tate let his seniors finish the game they’d started.

Marshall scores 21 in first quarter of 64-46 victory over Brandeis

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

Jordan Collazo scored 14 first half points in leading the run-and-gun Rams to a 64-46 victory over the Brandeis Broncos Saturday evening at the Paul Taylor Fieldhouse.

Marshall (19-12, 11-3 in 28-5A) dictated tempo the entire first half, helped by several steals from Tiffany Rosas and Heather Garza. Collazo was leading the team with five points when she committed her second foul with 2:02 remaining in the first quarter. When she returned to the game, she scored 9 of Marshall’s 17 second quarter points, helping build the team’s lead to 38-16 late in the second quarter. Rosas added eight points and Jenna Barnett contributed seven to Marshall’s first half effort.

The Lady Rams substituted freely in the second half, but kept the fast-paced tempo going. Although Marshall scored 26 second half points, only one Lady Rams scored more than four: Karly Gonzales had six.

Brandeis’s scoring was led by junior Alexis Vick. Vick finished with a team-high ten points; her six in the first half made her the only Lady Broncos to exceed three points for the first two quarters. Sophomore Alyssa Browne added nine points, and junior Mina Harris scored eight, all in the third quarter.

Brandeis (14-15, 3-10 in 28-5A) has games remaining against Jay, O’Connor and Warren.

Brandeis advances to fourth round with 51-14 victory over Edinburg North

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

It’s not often that Noah Copeland is overshadows by his Brandeis Bronco teammates, especially on nights where he runs the ball 22 times for 247 yards and 3 touchdowns.

But despite Copeland’s electrifying 67 yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half, two terrific defensive plays by Cody Rogers and two deep throws by Kyle Sewell in the second quarter proved to be the highlights of Brandeis’ 51-14 victory over the Edinburg North Cougars Saturday afternoon at the Alamodome.

Brandeis scored touchdowns on each of their first six possessions, but for a while, Edinburg North was keeping up. The Cougars responded to a 31 yard TD pass from Michael Barrientos to Dominique Britto with a 9-play, 88 yard drive; quarterback Matthew Munoz ran for an 8-yard touchdown to tie the score at 7. Then after Copeland’s 11-yard score, Munoz found Danny Cardenas behind the Brandeis secondary for a 65-yard touchdown, tying the game once again at 14.

But after Copeland’s 35 yard touchdown put Brandeis back in front 20-14 – the extra point was wide right - Edinburg North drove from their own 22 to the Brandeis 33. On fourth and one, the Cougars gave the ball to 1000-yard rusher Simon Edwards. Rogers hit Edwards behind the line of scrimmage and stripped the ball; although the Cougars recovered, they were short of the first down.

Two plays later, with Brandeis at the Edinburg North 44, Sewell threw deep to John Jackson, who made an amazing catch, battling two defenders for the football, then dragging them two yards into the end zone for the touchdown and extending the Brandeis lead to 27-14.

Edinburg North had one last gasp, moving the ball from their own 22 all the way to the Brandeis 2, a drive highlighted by a 47-yard catch-and-run by Juan Ramirez and a 30-yard pass to Cardenas. But on second and goal, Munoz’s throw over the middle was intercepted at the goal line by Rogers and returned to the 13 with 2:34 left.

The Broncos drove steadily from there to the Cougars 47, then called time out with one second remaining. After the Broncos showed a four-wide receiver set, Edinburg North coach Roy Garza called his own timeout. Once play resumed, Brandeis called the Big Ben play, sending three wideouts deep and letting Sewell throw the ball as far as his arm would allow. After six players went up for the football at the goal line, all 5’8 and 128 pounds of Dominique Britto came down with the reception, landing in the end zone for his second touchdown catch of the half. Boelhauf added the extra point, and Brandeis never looked back, taking a 34-14 lead into the locker room.

Brandeis ran the ball 41 times for 333 yards and passed for 158 against the Cougars. Edinburg North, which featured two thousand-yard rusher in Munoz and Edwards, was limited by Brandeis to 89 yards on 30 carries. After amassing 279 yards in the first half, Edinburg North was limited to 65 yards in the second.

Brandeis will play next in the Class 5A Division II State Quarterfinals against the New Braunfels Unicorns, with the game scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium.

With the storied defenses of both Brandeis and Pflugerville, fans could be forgiven if they were expecting a low-scoring game Saturday afternoon in the Alamodome.

But instead, they were treated to an offensive showcase, led by Broncos’ running back Noah Copleland’s six touchdowns, as Brandeis defeated Pflugerville 51-37.
