District champ Brackenridge claims 58-36 victory over Fox Tech

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

The newly state ranked Brackenridge Eagles kept their momentum with a 58-36 victory over the Fox Tech Buffaloes Tuesday night at the Alamo Convocation Center.

Brackenridge (18-11, 12-0 in 28-4A) entered the Texas Association of Coaches Poll at #24 Monday. They clinched the 28-4A champion outright with their victory over Kennedy last Friday, combined with Fox Tech’s loss to Memorial.

Fox Tech (16-12, 7-5 in 28-4A) fell into a second-place tie with Memorial due to the loss. Burbank, Edison, and Kennedy are all 6-6 in district, one game behind the Buffaloes and Minutemen. Three of these five teams will join Brackenridge in the playoffs.

Brackenridge fell behind 2-1 after Johnny Jones’ early field goal. Apparently, this just made the Eagles mad. Brackenridge responded with an 11-0 run, with the last nine points provided by Malcolm Greer. The Eagles led 16-6 after one quarter, and the Buffaloes never came closer than seven points the rest of the game.

Brackenridge’s top five scorers all average from 9.4 to 11.4 points a game, and Greer aside, their attack was as balanced Tuesday. Greer led the Eagle with 19 points, while Craig Cardona and Alan Davis each added 10.

The Eagles’ defense limited Fox Tech to six first quarter points and six third quarter points. Jones, who averages 23 points a game for Fox Tech, was held to seven points on three field goals. Isaias Ibarra led Fox Tech with 19 points.

Although Brackenridge’s Omar Guerrero had only two points, he helped the Eagles with six blocked shots, four assists, and four second half rebounds. Guerrero’s playing time was limited due to foul trouble.

Brackenridge used none of their timeouts Tuesday night.

The Brackenridge Eagles have now won 11 straight games; their last loss was to Stevens, a game which took place after Brackenridge had won their district opener. Of the Eagles’ 11 losses, 9 are to 5A teams in the top three in their own districts; the other two are to Antonian and Holy Cross.

Lady Eagles headed to postseason after 59-52 victory over Fox Tech

by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer

The Brackenridge Lady Eagles earned fourth place and a postseason berth in 28-4A with a 59-52 victory over the Fox Tech Lady Buffaloes Tuesday night at the Alamo Convocation Center.

Brackenridge (10-23, 7-7 in 28-4A) will face Steele in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs next week. Steele finished tied with Boerne Champion for first in 27-4A, and was named the first seed out of the district on a coin toss. Fox Tech finishes in seventh place in 28-4A.

For a while, it looked like a good thing that Kennedy lost at Lanier, which would have sent Brackenridge to the playoff even if the Eagles had lost. Fox Tech (5-22, 3-11 in 28-4A) started on a 7-0 run, and built the lead as high as 27-16 with three minutes left in the half. Although Brackenridge was able to cut in the lead, Fox Tech still led 33-26 at halftime. Christy Castillo scored 13 for Fox Tech, making 7 of 8 free throws attempts. The Lady Eagles stayed in the game thanks to a 10-point second quarter from April Brady.

Then Brackenridge, which started four sophomores and a freshman, went on a 12-0 run to start the second half, shutting out Fox Tech until the 1:45 mark of the third quarter. Brackenridge outscored Fox Tech 17-3 in the third quarter as their transition game took over. Brady, who led all scorers with 21, scored the tying and winning baskets. Brackenridge took the lead on a fast break when Brady accepted a behind-the-back pass from Megan Balderas and converted it into a layup. Gabriela Pedroza also scored on a behind-the-back assist from Balderas during the third. After three, Brackenridge led 43-36.

The Lady Eagles built the lead to as much as 11 in the fourth. Fox Tech rallied, but even as they were closing the gap, foul trouble was hurting them. Brackenridge, which played nine players, committed 22 fouls during the game. Fox Tech dressed eight players, all of whom played, and committed 27 fouls. Kenosha Balboa fouled out with 6:59 left in the game, and Kim Alonzo fouled out with 2:35 remaining. When Castillo fouled out with 2:11 remaining, the Lady Buffaloes were within 55-50, but had only five players available; three of their five leading scorers had fouled out – and Grace Seward, their fourth leading scorer, was playing with four fouls.

By the time Brady fouled out for Brackenridge with 2.66 seconds left, Brackenridge had the game in hand.

Lady Bulldogs outscore Brack 51-15 in middle two quarters of 67-44 victory

by Mark Kusenberger

Monique Alvarado scored 25 points and Sam Webb added 17 as the Burbank Lady Bulldogs used aggressive defense to produce easy baskets in defeating the Brackenridge Eagles 67-44 Friday evening at the Alamo Convocation Center.

With the victory, Burbank (9-8, 2-0 in 28-4A) remains tied with Lanier and Edison for the district lead. Burbank has won 5 of their last 7 games; they will face Lanier on Tuesday at noon.

The game was halted with 2:56 left in the first quarter when Burbank’s Dorian Hernandez suffered an injury to her left leg. Trainers braced her leg before she stood up; she did not return to action.

Brackenridge (4-16, 0-2 in 28-4A) led 19-12 after one quarter despite struggles at the free throw line. Even after they fell behind in the second, Megan Balderas scored to retie the game at 26, and after a Webb basket restored Burbank’s lead, April Brady sank two free throws to tie the game at 28. But Burbank closed the half on a 6-0 run, all on free throws, to take a 34-28 lead into intermission. Alvarado contributed three of the points and finished 9 of 14 from the free throw line for the game.

Burbank’s third quarter performance had fans wanting copies of coach Laura Zapata’s halftime speech. The Lady Bulldogs dominated all phases of the game on their way to outscoring Brackenridge 29-6. Valerie Aziaga (8 points), Alvarado (7) and Sam Webb (6) each equaled or bettered the Lady Eagles’ third quarter scoring production.

Burbank’s aggressiveness did lead to a lot of fouls. Both Sam Webb and Kandace Regalado fouled out of the game, but not before Burbank had the victory well in hand.

BRACKENRIDGE SCORING: Megan Balderas 8, April Brady 8, Dorene Ramirez 6, Gabriela Pedraza 5, Khaina Pierce 4, Ashley Ramirez 4, Lupe Leon 3, Natalie Lopez 2, Kristin Benavides 2, Angelica Dominguez 2, Imani Peterson, Nicole Sandoval, Montrashae Harris, Trisha Garza

BURBANK SCORING: Monique Alvarado 25, Sam Webb 15, Kim Garcia 8, Valerie Aziaga 8, Tania Hernandez 4, Ingrid Ortega 4, Marisol Acosta 2, Kandace Regalado 1, Cassie Guerrero, Dorian Hernandez, Jennifer Gonzales, Mariscela Acosta

Student Spotlight: Brittany May, Brackenridge Volleyball

Posted by Jenina Hernandez on October 23, 2009 at 8:11 am

by Jenina Hernandez
SAsports.com Staff Writer

Ask Brittany May what her favorite part of being a Brackenridge Eagle is, and she will answer undoubtedly that it’s, “being an athlete.” Standing tall at 5’7 May is the powerful middle hitter for the girls’ volleyball team. She has a fierce drive to win that is evident in how she handles the two out of three block rotations she plays on the volleyball court.

May, a senior, started playing sports at the age of 10. During her freshmen year at “Brack” she first tried her legs out on the track field. Since then volleyball has become her favorite sport, and according to Coach Gina Hunter, Brittany skills have been an indispensable asset to the team.

“Brittany has really blossomed; she has high expectations for herself and has taken on a bigger role for the team,” Hunter said. “To be a middle hitter you have to be very athletic and in good shape. She is a strong blocker and a consistently strong hitter.”

After a strong start in the season, a few tough losses set the Eagles back. However these setbacks became a learning experience and according to May, it brought the team closer together.

“When we went to the Hill Country Tournament, we went to the YO Ranch and bonded… that was a great experience,” May recalled.

Currently the Eagles must win the next two matches against Lanier and Burbank to earn the second place seed in District 28-4A, and a rematch with Boerne Champion in the playoffs. According to Hunter, the Eagles stand a good chance because of May’s 60 percent kills on the ball and her overall determination to win.

“My goals athletically are to get a scholarship to play volleyball and to make the playoffs and win” May said.

Off the court, May’s favorite subjects are English and Government. In addition to volleyball she is also involved with the track team and SWAT team.

“She is a very great kid, she has a great attitude and she very talented. She is a well rounded student both academically and athletically,” Hunter said.

May has aspirations to be a certified trainer for a professional sports team and hopes to have her pick of colleges and universities where she can major in sports medicine and continue to play volleyball.

“My mom and brother are super supportive and that makes it fun for me to have them there cheering me on,” May said.

No doubt her family and the fans of the Brackenridge Eagles will be rooting for May and the team to pull out two much needed and desired victories.

It was a special night at the ACC, as the SAISD Dig For The Cure event started with the recognition of breast cancer survivors.

Then it was on - Brackenridge vs. Edison to kick things off.

All proceeds, including admission and the 1st annual SAISD Dig For the Cure T-Shirts, went to the local Komen Foundation.

And although Samantha Thatcher and the Eagles pushed it to four sets, it was Edison moving to 10-0 in 28-4A. Then it was time for the Jefferson-Lanier match.

Lauren Garcia had a great game, and was instrumental in the Mustangs’ comeback from two sets down.

Marina Tello passes to a teammate.

Erika Cruz caused Jefferson trouble all night long.

Jackie Acosta also was a force on the Lanier front line.

Marissa Perez helped get the Voks out to a 2-0 lead in sets.

But Julianne Ehrlich and the Mustangs had other ideas.

Ashley Flores (#10), Samantha Salinas (#11), and Nyssa Sanchez (#7) helped with the comeback; Jeff defeated Lanier 3-2 and moved closer to a playoff spot in 28-4A.

The final race of the Region IV 5A meet - the 1600 meter relay - provided the same drama that usually accompanies great athletic events.

And while the Wagner Thunderbirds won this battle over Brownsville Pace, Judson, Warren, Eagle Pass, and Smithson Valley. it was the Judson boys and girls who won the team championships.

Many came to see New Braunfels’ pole vault star Demi Payne.

She won, and qualified for the state meet, to be held June 5-6.

Judson did, however, win the 400 and 800 meter relay races.

Christina Holland of Judson broke the regional record in the 300 meter hurdles.

The 110 hurdle finals - from left to right - Hayden Greenbauer, Clark (4th), Aaron Green, Madison (1st), Phillip Gaines, Judson (2nd)

Sidney Cauthorn of Lake Travis won the 4A 400 meter race ahead of teammate Victoria Noetzel.

How’s this for close in the 200: 1. (left) Sheldon McClain, Steele, 21.94; 2. (right) Cameron Hickman, Hutto, 21.98; 3. (center) Willie Culpepper, Brackenridge, 22.09.
