39-29 victory over Bandera puts them one game out of third place
by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer
Boerne limited Bandera to 12 points over the first three quarters on their way to a 39-29 victory Tuesday evening at Greyhound Gym.
Bandera came into the ballgame in second place in 30-3A, but struggled mightily with Boerne coach Amy Ruede’s defensive scheme. Boerne (14-16, 4-4 in 30-3A) mixed a press with a 2-3 zone to neutralize the height of Bandera. In the first half, the Lady Bulldogs committed eight fouls and scored only nine points. They also had 20 turnovers compared to 19 field goal attempts.
Only four players scored in the first quarter, with featured a three-and-a-half minute scoring drought with the score stuck at Boerne 4, Bandera 2. Kayla Reynolds’ three-pointer gave Bandera their only lead at 5-4 before Boerne’s Katy Kazan responded with a personal 8-0 run during which five minutes of clock was consumed. Kazan finished with a game-high 15 points.
Boerne’s aggressive offense also created foul trouble for Bandera team leader Chelsea Calahan. Although Boerne’s Bailee Taylor fouled out, Calahan spent most of the first half on the bench with foul trouble and finished with only three points. Bandera got a team-high eight points from Taylor Shackelford, all in the fourth quarter, to help Bandera stay within shouting distance, but drew no closer than nine in the final frame.
Bandera (9-20, 5-3 in 30-3A) fell into a tie for second place with Canyon Lake, who defeated Fredericksburg Tuesday night. Boerne is now one game behind Bandera and Canyon Lake with two games left to play. Bandera and Canyon Lake face each other Friday night at Bandera; Bandera closes against Fredericksburg, while Canyon Lake hosts district-leading Wimberley next Tuesday. Boerne, which is 4-0 in home district games but 0-4 in road district games, finishes at home against district-leading Wimberley and at winless-in-district Ingram Tom Moore.

Greyhounds take big lead, hold on for 53-48 victory over Bandera
by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Senior Writer
Chad Long’s nine first quarter points helped Boerne take a first quarter lead, then Michael Stockton’s fourth quarter free throws helped them keep it as the Boerne Greyhounds defeated the Bandera Bulldogs 53-48 Tuesday night at Greyhound Gym.
Long sank three three-pointers for Boerne in the first quarter; the first two each tied the game, and the third gave the Greyhounds (15-15, 4-2 in 30-3A) their 13-8 first quarter lead. The last two treys were part of a 10-0 run which staked Boerne to a 15-8 lead, which Bandera eventually whittled down to 19-18 on free throws by Derek Draper. Boerne responded with a 9-0 run, including Stockton’s score on an assist from Jackson Miller, putting Boerne ahead by 10 once again.
The Greyhounds led by as much as 14 at 42-28 before Bandera (6-15, 0-6 in 30-3A) crept back into the ballgame. Threes by Dustin Linder and Draper capped an 8-0 Bulldog run which closed Bandera within 48-44. Stockton scored Boerne’s last five points, including three of four free throws, to keep Boerne in front at the end.
Long led the Greyhounds with 15 points, followed by Stockton’s 12 and Miller’s 11. Zach Evans through in seven points, all in the third quarter, and provided harassing defense, taking several steals in the first quarter and a crucial one with 37.38 seconds left to help protect the lead late.
Draper, Bandera’s leading scorer with 13 points a game, was limited to five Tuesday night. Jeff Jensen, who averages ten points a game for Bandera, scored ten to lead the Bulldogs despite committing his fourth foul with 5:59 remaining in the third quarter.
The Boerne win, combined with Wimberley’s loss to Ingram Tom Moore and Fredericksburg’s victory at Canyon Lake, leaves Fredericksburg alone in first place in 30-3A at 4-1. Boerne and Wimberley, who face each other Friday in Boerne, are tied for second one game behind Fredericksburg at 4-2; Ingram Tom Moore is in fourth place, one game behind Boerne and Wimberley.

Shane Segovia throws 3-hitter as Pirates run-rule Bulldogs
by Mark Kusenberger
SAsports.com Staff Writer

The Bandera Bulldogs tried three pitchers against state-ranked Sinton, but the Pirates solved them all on their way to a 10-0 victory in five innings at Inselmann Field.
In a one-game, third round series rescheduled due to rain, Sinton advanced to face Giddings in the Class 3A Region Semifinals. Scouts from Giddings were readily visible, as were scouts from the other two Region semifinalists, Robstown and Bellville.
The Pirates took command right away off losing pitcher Noah Robison when Roy Perez blasted a 2-2 pitch far over the left field fence to give Sinton a 1-0 lead. Chris Garcia and Carson Cave each scored on wild pitches in the second inning to extend Sinton’s lead to 3-0.
The Pirates piled on in the third. With one out, Joe Rodriguez drew a four-pitch walk, then was doubled to third by Gabe Garcia. Brandon Jennings came over from third base to pitch for Bandera, but before he could get comfortable on the mound, he walked Chris Garcia to load the bases, then gave up an RBI single to Cave to score Rodriguez and make the Sinton lead 4-0 with the bases still loaded. Ryan Cantu followed with a two-run single up the middle; Chris Garcia was thrown out at third on the play, but Gabe Garcia’s courtesy runner Reno Rendon and Chris Garcia both scored to put Sinton ahead 6-0.
Sinton scored the clinching runs in the fifth on a single by Chris Garcia, a wild pitch, a fielder’s choice grounder and an error.
Meanwhile, Sinton pitcher Shane Segovia was making any lead look safe. Bandera did threaten in the first with a two-out double by Mikey Cardenas and a single by Brandon Jennings, but both runners were stranded when Segovia struck out Jonathan Robinson.
Robinson’s whiff began a stretch in which Segovia struck out 8 of 11 hitters he faced. Segovia was so dominant in the 4th inning that Bandera hitters only made contact with 1 of his 17 pitches – and Robinson tipped that pitch foul. Segovia walked one and struck out three that inning, finishing the game with a three-hit shutout.
Sinton (23-7) has not lost to a team below 4A all season. Their losses include two to 4A Region Semifinalist Corpus Christi Calallen, one to 5A Region Semifinalist Mission Sharyland, and one to Corpus Christi Ray, who lost to Calallen in their one-game area round series 1-0. Bandera’s only game against a 4A or larger school listed on MaxPreps.com was against Fox Tech, a game won by Bandera 8-3.

The John Jay Mustangs girls basketball team may still be young, but they are mature enough to step up to the plate in a big game.
And they delivered in a big way, winning the SAsports.com Jaguar Classic Championship over the defending champion Steele Knights Saturday afternoon at Floresville High School.
In their semifinal win over Frenship, the Mustangs prevailed despite missing a ton of shots. Against Steele, it was if they couldn’t miss. By the half, the score read Jay 40, Steele 9.
And It wasn’t just the Knight fans that were stunned.
“That might have been one of the best executed halves of girls basketball I’ve seen in a long time,” said one official at the tournament, who had admittedly come to the see the championship game to watch Steele’s Meighan Simmons play.
The key to the Mustangs’ win was the play by all five starters, which features three sophomores and two juniors.
Tournament MVP Erica Donovan was solid as a force in the paint, an outside threat, and even running the point at times. Point guard Julissa Garrett (All-Tournament) took advantage when the Mustangs spread the floor by driving into the lane for layups, tear-drops, and taking great care of the ball in general. Kiara Taylor was on fire from outside. Vanessa Orr was money inside, converting almost every pass sent her way inside off of a double team into two points. And Maretta Stubbs was everywhere needed - on the boards, grabbing every loose ball, and causing havoc defensively. She also scored the game’s first five points, starting the offensive wave that the Mustangs would ride into halftime.
And while everything was going right for the Mustangs, everything was going wrong for the Steele Knights. They became increasingly frustrated as the first half went along, opting for the outside shot - shots that weren’t falling.
But the tournament wasn’t without its bright spots for Steele. They looked very impressive against a Poth team that is looking better every week. Olivia Patterson had an incredible tournament, and was recognized for her efforts with All-Tourney status. McKenzie Adams is a solid post for the Knights, as is Shayla Vrana. Olivia Burns is stepping things up at her position.
Oh yeah - and Meighan Simmons is still the best overall player the city has ever seen.
In the third place game, the Frenship Tigers defeated Poth; East Central knocked off Calallen to take the Consolation Championship; Tivy upended Brackenridge as well on Saturday.
Other members of the All-Tournament team:
Krista Ford, Frenship
Kelsey Titzman, Poth
Melody Dominguez, Brackenridge
Cheyenne Berry, Lytle
Stephanie Erskine, Floresville
Kaitlyn Overby, Tivy
Monique Waiters, East Central
Most spirited: The Lytle Lady Pirates were cheering for everyone that played. They would help organize cheers for parents of other schools that were playing.
Dance Award: We had the music going all-tournament long, and this award could go to Del Rio, Frenship, Southwest, Lytle, Carrizo Springs, Southside, and several others.
Watch in the coming weeks for: Several teams that will make some noise in their districts. Southside only lost to 3rd place Frenship by two points. And Floresville beat Southside. These two are in 29-4A, and will be favorites in the district.
Watch in the coming weeks for: Burbank and Brackenridge. These 28-4A teams impressed everyone, and will battle for district supremacy.
Watch in the coming weeks for: Kerrville Tivy. They have one senior in Kaitlyn Overby. Kelsi Wilmot plays like a senior. And everyone else on the team can get hot at any given time. Remember, they took John Jay, the Tournament Champion, to overtime Friday night. And in 27-4A, you have Tivy, Steele, NB Canyon, Boerne Champion (lost to John Jay by single digits twice), Clemens (much improved over the past two years), Alamo Heights, Seguin - yeah, its a tough district. But Tivy will make the playoffs.
Friday Results:
Steele 84, Medina Valley 22
Jay 54, Kerrville Tivy 49 - OT
Frenship 52, Brackenridge 39
Poth 63, Burbank 42
Frenship 34, Southside 32

Jay 58, Del Rio 30
Lee 44, Brandeis 37
Southwest 50, La Vernia 32
Floresville 63, Southside 57
