Volleyball: Marion sweeps Navarro Tournament PDF Print Email
Written by Mark Kusenberger

The Marion Lady Bulldogs completed a sweep on the Navarro Tournament with a 25-9, 25-19, 25-11 win over the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs Saturday afternoon at Navarro High School.

Marion (5-0) dominated the first set 25-9, then substituted liberally the rest of the match to give their bench players ample court time.

Nixon-Smiley (0-3) actually took a 2-0 lead in the first set on a block by Abigail Scarbrough and a kill by Kelby Henderson (Jessica Flores with the assist.)  Then Marion went on a 15-2 run, scoring four points on Skylar Sullivan's serve and seven on Amber Fleming's.  Sullivan also contributed five assists, while Deidra Reasor added three blocks on the way to a 25-9 win.

Marion coach Bernice Voigt then made a point on involving her second stringers, and the Mustangs took advantage to take a 10-3 lead.  A 7-1 Marion run closed the gap to 11-10, but Nixon-Smiley recovered with three straight points to build the lead to 14-10.

Then Sullivan assisted a Reasor kill, took over the serve and a 7-0 Marion run began.  Reasor closed the run with three consecutive blocks.  Nixon-Smiley would come no closer than two as the Bulldogs won the set 25-19.

Sullivan again led the charge in the third set.  Marion's 5-0 run to open the set included two Sullivan assists and two Sullivan aces.  Nixon-Smiley did close with 9-7 with a 4-0 run featuring a Hailey Boatright ace and a Devon Tristan block.  Then Fleming, topping her run of serves in the first set, served her team to nine straight points, including two aces.  Marion never looked by in a 25-11 third set win.

Sullivan led the Bulldogs with 17 assists.  Reasor had four kills and six blocks, Diana Heinrich added five kills.

Flores led the Mustangs with six assists; Henderson and Devon Tristan had three kills apiece.

Marion's next match will be Tuesday at Poteet.  Nixon-Smiley will face host Kenedy in their next match on Wednesday.

Over the past two years, the Harper Ladyhorns have adjusted very well in the move from 1A to 2A, even advancing farther as a 2A team this year than in their 1A seasons.

But last night at Wimberley, they ran into the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs, and the result was a 57-31 win for Nixon-Smiley, and a trip to the 2A regional tournament on Friday in Seguin.
