The Marion Lady Bulldogs completed a sweep on the Navarro Tournament with a 25-9, 25-19, 25-11 win over the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs Saturday afternoon at Navarro High School.
Marion (5-0) dominated the first set 25-9, then substituted liberally the rest of the match to give their bench players ample court time.
Nixon-Smiley (0-3) actually took a 2-0 lead in the first set on a block by Abigail Scarbrough and a kill by Kelby Henderson (Jessica Flores with the assist.) Then Marion went on a 15-2 run, scoring four points on Skylar Sullivan's serve and seven on Amber Fleming's. Sullivan also contributed five assists, while Deidra Reasor added three blocks on the way to a 25-9 win.
Marion coach Bernice Voigt then made a point on involving her second stringers, and the Mustangs took advantage to take a 10-3 lead. A 7-1 Marion run closed the gap to 11-10, but Nixon-Smiley recovered with three straight points to build the lead to 14-10.
Then Sullivan assisted a Reasor kill, took over the serve and a 7-0 Marion run began. Reasor closed the run with three consecutive blocks. Nixon-Smiley would come no closer than two as the Bulldogs won the set 25-19.
Sullivan again led the charge in the third set. Marion's 5-0 run to open the set included two Sullivan assists and two Sullivan aces. Nixon-Smiley did close with 9-7 with a 4-0 run featuring a Hailey Boatright ace and a Devon Tristan block. Then Fleming, topping her run of serves in the first set, served her team to nine straight points, including two aces. Marion never looked by in a 25-11 third set win.
Sullivan led the Bulldogs with 17 assists. Reasor had four kills and six blocks, Diana Heinrich added five kills.
Flores led the Mustangs with six assists; Henderson and Devon Tristan had three kills apiece.
Marion's next match will be Tuesday at Poteet. Nixon-Smiley will face host Kenedy in their next match on Wednesday. |
