It was a wild match at Paul Taylor on Monday night, as Edison outlasted Marshall 23-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-25, 15-12.

Freak play gives Marshall 12-11 victory over Taft

Trailing 11-8 against Taft with the bases loaded and two out, Marshall fans can’t have felt optimistic when Chase Hubbert hit a ground ball to the shortstop.

Fortunately for the Rams, the ball was hit softly enough that David Gonzalez’ only play was to first base. His throw skipped past first baseman Christian Garza, allowing two runs to score. Then Garza’s throw to the plate bounced past the catcher, off the home plate umpire, and into the Marshall dugout, allowing Marcus Jimenez to score from first and Hubbert to circle the bases for the winning run in a 12-11 victory Friday night at Inselmann Field.

Marshall (7-14-1, 5-7 in 28-5A) never led until Hubbert stepped on home plate to end the game. A Taft victory would have vaulted the Raiders into fourth place in 28-5A, one-half game ahead of Jay. Taft faces Jay (6-5) next Tuesday at Northside Baseball Field #2; Jay defeated Taft 5-3 in the first round of district play.

Mustangs build big lead, hang for dear life in 9-7 win over Marshall

Jay coach Johnny Campos is employing an unusual strategy to get the most out of his pitching staff.

Rather than rotate his two best pitchers, for the last three games he’s used Jason Maldonado as long as he’s effective, then used fireballer Roland Botello to close.

Not only is it working, it’s propelled Jay to a five-game winning streak and a tie for second place – “That’s the scary part!” Campos said after the game – after Jay’s 9-7 victory over the Marshall Rams Friday night at Inselmann Field.
